March 21, 2005 - In the newest issue of Nintendo Power Magazine, the publication has revealed the first screens and details for Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings for the Nintendo DS handheld.

According to the article, Majesco will be publishing this "historical" turn-based strategy game in the fourth quarter of this year. Features mentioned in the article include five civilizations to control, 15 types of buildings to construct, and 50 unique unit types to command. There's also the promise of wireless multiplayer for up to four player competitions.
When contacted, Majesco representatives had nothing new to offer regarding the details listed in the Nintendo Power article.

Nintendo Power issue 191 is currently heading to subscribers.

This would be interesting.... Strategy games could be VERY cool on the DS.... IE the battle screen on top... and the command screen on the bottom!

comments?

Oooh..I hadn't thought of the prospect of strategy games on the DS. THis could make everyone rethink the way strategy games are done. Awesome!!

"The bottom screen of the DS is where most of the strategic gameplay takes place. As you guide your units around, the top screen displays useful stats and information about what's happening in context, such as whether the different terrain will confer defensive bonuses, and so forth. When units attack one another, the top screen switches to an Advance Wars-style look at the outcome, and these sequences look quite nice. Cavalry charge the ranks of swordsmen, archers rain arrows on their foes, and more. The animation is smooth and good-looking, and we could easily tell the difference between the Briton units we were playing as and the Saracen foes we were fighting against. "

This is what I found about the two screens and how they will be used in AOE.

I'm not really looking forward to it. I mean I love AOE and all, but I'm worried that this game will play more like Advance wars. That's not really a bad thing, but I want AOE to play like AOE. I can't really judge this game yet because I have little to no info on it, but as of this moment i am not looking forward to it.

I've played it. It's probably a 10-15 dollar purchase for any given person, assuming there's interest to begin wtih with that style of game.

It's not a traditional strategy game, as you've probably figured out by this point. It's more similar to a Japanese RPG. However, it's still strongly stagnant of AOE "feel". Players are given turns and during these turns they are allowed to upgrade tech, build units, or move units. Each unit is particularly stronger than another given unit, as with all games such as these. It's essentially an RTS turned in to a TBS, which is somewhat odd. But it plays like that. Hard to explain, again..

Decent game. But I played for hours on my way to California only to have it freeze... egh..

It seems like a pretty cool idea for a game.
have you ever played Deadly Games: Jagged Alliance (or maybe it was Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games) for the PC? That was a turn based commando style game. Very fun! graphics weren't that great.. but IMO it was alot of fun. There were cool weapons and commandos (mercenaries) to work wtih and it was Turn Based.

I am sure this game would be pretty cool in that style.

Oh it wasn't the cart's fault. My bad for not clarifying. When DS cart contacts get damaged, they fail to recognize when booting up the DS, corrupt data in saves, or freeze in the middle of gameplay. I've experienced this various times. So if you see any of those symptoms, be wary of the others.

It was the card. Be cautious buying used games. 2 out of 2 I've bought have been this way. :-(
