So, I have McAfee on my computer, and according to that, my PC is fine, with no viruses or anything.

But occasionally I get a pop up from some Antivirus thing saying that my PC does have viruses, and that I should install their company's software. Do you think that Antivirus one is actually a virus trying to pretend it's not and trying to get me to download it so that it can infect my computer?

Or is McAfee lying to me, and I really already have viruses, and installing the Antivirus would get rid of them?

i think that is a virus so dont mess with it cause McAfee and Norton are two respectable virus blockers so im saying update your McAfee to the most recent if you can and go from there

No it's just a scam. I get popups like that all the time. Don't pay attention to it :)

When do you get these pop-ups? These usually just pop up when surfing the web and are just ways to get you to their site. I also recommend updating you McAfee and then running a scan. If anything, it's probably just spyware. Not sure if McAfee has spyware tools. If it does, run a scan with that as well.

It's a scam to get you to buy spyware. I had a virus whose soul purpose was to completely disable my computer to buy their spyware "antivirus" product to get rid of the infection.

yeah i had a compy that caught a nasty bug and died...it was so tragic..

but i just ended up having constant popup and task bar alerts saying you are SOL unless you buy this

A few things here.

1) McAfee is not respectable, it has a horrible detection rate and usually just eats resources while allowing viruses and malware right past it. Norton is no better, and usually takes more resources. If you wish to pay for an antivirus solution, I highly recommend products from ESET (NOD32 for antivirus, Smart Security for a full protection suite) or Kaspersky. Else, download and install the free version of Avira (http://www.free-av.com) and use that instead. All of these are low on system resources, have phenomenal detection rates for infections, and in the case of ESET update definitions multiple times per day to ensure you have the most recent protection.

2) You have malware. Whether a virus, trojan, or just a spyware program, you should remove it as quickly as possible so it doesn't continue spreading or downloading other variants of malware and going from there. I'd recommend downloading, installing and updating (important step) the free version of MalwareBytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) and allowing that to scan your entire computer, then removing anything it finds at the end of the scan (not the quickest process in the world). This should remove nearly all malware from your computer, removing those annoying popups. If that doesn't work, I have a few more suggestions for you.

ok ive had norton for years and its detected everything on this compy that weve had for like 5 years

only recently since we havent updated the norton in like 2 years has it started to fail out
I must be a lucky one

Mai... get AVG. you can download it free, but, I don't have a link. Google it, and you should be able to find the right one; unless someone else can give you a link.

I've read recently (MaximumPC Magazine) that the latest Norton has actually gotten better because it got completely re-written and is now one of the better paid apps. I used it on my recent PC purchase since it had a free trial and I must say I was impressed with it. Although currently I'm using AVG Free since I can't justify spending money on an anti-virus for computers that rarely go online. If I do purchase one, it's going to be ESET.

I've tried a few anti virus programs and the best I've found is Avira Anti-Virus {free version}. AVG is pretty good, too.

1) Why are the free things better than what you pay for? :lol

2) I did that and it found two things, which I got rid of. So far, so good. I guess I'll post again if I get another problem.

Aww it dont matter by tommorow that ...conficker virus will most likely fry the **** outta this old thing here...

well i had some good memories with this thing

Avira AntiVir Personal- Free Antivirus, you can download that one for free too and it works, its really good. I use it along with AVG and Spybot is another good one to get too, i use that as well. Anyway, stay way from Norton it causes more problems then its solves and the program its self will most likely become a virus and then it becomes really hard to get rid of.

But thats just my take on Norton from experience.

You're running two antivirus programs? That's never a good idea. Besides scanning every file at least twice upon access, they can sometimes find each other to be a threat and cause corruption for both. Have only one installed.

mariorulezman, what's the BSOD error code? (0x0000007b for example).

The best is Symantec Antivirus 10.1 or 10.2 ... Corp edition.

I actually have the corp edition... Enpoint is also good. These are not free of course. If you have the money to spend and want a quality AV program... those are the best so far from what I have used.

The free ones listed above aren't too bad. IMO they aren't as good as Symantec Corp or Endpoint... BUT you won't get much better for free... and they aren't far behind Symantec Corp and Endpoint.

Yeah, they don't interfere with each other and they never scan at the same time. I have both because AVG can't get rid of something's, as Avira can and if Avira and AVG can't deal with it, spybot can. But spybots more of an anti spyware program but it does help with virus too.
My laptop has only been infected once with a virus but ever since i'v had all three programs i haven't had a problem or virus since. So they work for me which is all i need.
