That is... network attached storage unit.

Its all over microsoft's website : "windows powered NAS"

I want to create one of these units with an older computer ... so I can have some extra storage... as I could have a potential of a 1 tera storage box.

Anyway.... anyone know how to create one of these with a win oS? It has to be headless... meaning can be used without monitor or input devices... and can be edit like a router could be via an IP address to connect.

I appreciate the help.

Thanks,

I really have no clue.. could try google, but the only thing that I found on there were buyable ones... so I don't really know

They could have something like that on the g4tech website though.. i think i remember seeing something like that on Screen Savers one day

man.. I am having that same problem.

I wonder if the info is not there....

There are somethings that are covered up out there (such as building your own laptop) that you cannot do it easily.... and there are only highly limited resources on how to do it. .... and no where to get the parts if you did accomplish finding how.

I thought Microsoft's website would give the least clue on how to do this... but everything they have states" Powered by Msoft NAS systems" and the link is where to buy them.

Then I tried looking for the Msoft storage server software they advertise.... and I cannot buy it from Msoft... or anywhere.
So it has to be covered up a bit for large firms..or something.

the search is on I guess.

Who knows... I've never really heard of something like that besides for the thing I saw on screen savers... and alll they really did was combine a bunch of HD's in a single machine.

thats basically what it is... with remote management (like a router is setup)

BUT you can access the drives on that machine... like you could access a server's hard drives ... except this is for storage only... not for processing info..etc.. so the overhead is light... and you only need small system specs for it.

Guy says that it's probably about the same price to just buy one.  Doesn't really explain how to make one though...

thats certainly a bummer :(

I was hoping to do this pretty cheaply. I am using an old P2 266 Mhz computer that has 384 ram.
This should be more than plenty for a NAS unit.

I am going to check into a few things that the author talked about... I hope I can find this out... and its not expensive.

Why is it that when I want to do something... its always friggin expensive?! :lol

Beats me, but I wouldn't mind building one as well to store some uncompressed video when I make my movies.

Seems like it'd be simple if there were actually plans online...
