Arm-a-Chair Hour VIII (We're still alive)

Since when is Roger Ebert an art expert? lol. Anyways, if I could, I would challenge him to play {or rather, watch} Shadow of Colossus in its entirety and look me straight in the eye and tell me it is not art. Sure it's not a "piece" of art in the literal sense like you can hang it on your wall, but it is LIVE art. So many beautiful images from that game are ingrained in my memory and will be forever. I certainly cannot say that about any painting done by Pollack, Warhol, or many other famous "artists". Well enough ranting for now. I definitely wanna give this one a listen when I get home tonight!

I second this.

Excellent podcast Stealth. However, what was the comment made about Okami not being something by today's standards? I have to re-listen to that. Yet someone claimed Okami was great, but was lacking something which is something I didn't quite catch.

He won't. He's already made up his mind and isn't willing to listen to the other side, as stated in his article. This is the reason why there wasn't a lot of response this time, people weren't going to waste their breath on someone who isn't willing to look at video games with an open mind.

I think I mentioned during the podcast that Okami was visually innovative but aside from that failed to really do anything differently as a videogame.

Does that answer your question? I might have to re-listen to that part myself.

Maybe not, but it's still one of the best games I've ever played and it's better than 90% of the crap out these days. I could only wish for more games like Okami.

Yes sir, it does. So are you saying, it still maintains the basic elements of a Zelda-clone even with the glitter and glamor it presented to us?

I wouldn't say "maintains" so much as "falls back on." It may be prettier, but in many fundamental ways it is no different from ALLTP.

I'm not disagreeing. In the context of what we were talking about though (videogames as art unto themselves) I don't believe Okami is anything special. It's visually exciting and pretty, but that's nothing new that videogames and only videogames can provide. That doesn't make it a bad game, necessarily, depending on what you're looking for in a game, but it does make it a bad example for a videogame as a work of art.

Ahh gotcha! I guess I can agree with that. It is a great game though and it's really too bad it went so overlooked. The studio that made it went under due to poor sales. And while I agree it was not the most original game, it still had some nice and fresh ideas and it's a shame we don't see more games like it.

That's what I was trying to mean actually. So, yes precisely. :)

Wurd. Clover was a really good Studio (Godhand and Viewtiful Joe were two of theirs, I think...). Although it no longer exists as Clover anymore, there is hope: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3157219

I haven't heard much about SEEDS, so its possible that studio went under as well...

Haha, tis a nice nerd haven if ever there was one. I'm pretty sure I know who this is but I'll let you keep your anonymity until you see fit to do otherwise.

Well X2, if you must know, I'm Stealth Toilet's rl idol, which might explain why he's so favourable with the ladies.......ya. Actually, I'm a newbie on Arm-a-chair hour, and starting to fall for this whole podcast trend. So fun!
