This is rather cool... has anyone read up on ATI's Eyefinity technology?

Check out this YouTube video:
ATI Eyefinity Debut | 3D Gaming at 5760x2400

Here is ATI's page regarding Eyeinfinity:

Now... we need to have screens with smaller casings so the screen splits are more seemless. This is the only problem to this date (IMO). But it can be a big one... the screen borders to get in the way.

Thoughts?

I would say there is one bigger problem than that and that is price. How many people are willing to buy more than 2 monitors? Also, how much is this GPU going to cost? I highly doubt it's going to be less than $300. Plus not many people have the space to place more than 2 monitors, especially if you're going more than 20". 3 of those horizontally equal over 60".

Don't get me wrong, this technology is awesome and would love to do this, but seems to be slightly impractical unless you are a serious multitasker. I would not watch movies on this due to the "seams" that would be visible. I would play games on it and also if I had a serious need for more than two monitors.

well... it's not as bad as you think. The 5870 costs around $380 which is expensive, but not any more than other high end cards. It's less than the 4870 X2 was... which was $550+.

It also depends on which monitors you utilize on your system.

I understand the cost concerns. It's not going to be cheap by any means. However, it is very cool they are bringing this technology out. There have been systems to do this in the past... IE Matrox has done monitor solutions for years. This takes it a little further though. And new technology is rarely cheap (at 1st).

Yeah, I don't think many people would be able to afford that. Only serious enthusiasts need apply, which is why I think it won't ever get cheaper.

This is what I was trying to say. I don't think monitors smaller than 19" will suffice to immerse you in the game. It's still be nice to have, but I think at this point you're just wasting dollars. Kind of how 1080p resolution is wasted on screens smaller than 42".

I agree, it is awesome and hope that it does become cheaper as I would like to have more than 2 monitors. Also, another thing to think about is all the energy used to power all those goodies. Don't think that's very practical either for most.

If all goes as planned and I pick up a well-paying job after college, I look forward to taking advantage of this technology. That or having an IMAX theatre built into my house.
