keep practicing, I think the one of Cooheed and Cambria now has what you would call "metering off the sky" where the camera underexposed the poeple.
 
well, a camera has a light meter. if you get a lot of sun in coming in the lens, it reads the exposure off the sky and does not expose the people enough, leading to shadowy people.
