Band Trouble

Can You Taste the Wicked in the Room
I just found out today that my band wants to replace me with some other drummer. I haven't met the guy yet, but all I know is they want me to go from drummer to throat (which is screaming and growling to you that don't know), well anyways, I've been in this band since the 8th grade and I've been playing drums for 7 years, and these guys are my best friends, so I'm confused if I should go along with it, resist it, or just leave the band altogether and start another one? All I know is that this is going to take some time to think about, and probably a hard decision to make in the end. Maybe you guys can help me out by posting your thoughts.

depends what your commitment to the band is. Is it something you really want to be in? Are you being replaced because the other guy is better (gotta be honest with yourself there)? Do they want to just change up the line a bit to try to get a new sound or something fresh?

If you are not happy about the decision.... and you want to play drums, then you probably should find a new band.... UNLESS this is only temporary for whatever reason.

For a band to really work.. selfish intent should not be there.... nor discontent. If I wanted to play guitar in a band.... and I got thrown to singer without a guitar.... I wouldn't like that at all (I can't sing anyway). I want to play guitar... plain and simple... if there is not a guitar spot for me, I need to go do something else. You can't perform in something you don't want to do. If you don't mind the place you are being put... then go with it. At least the didn't kick you totally out of the band or anything :)

It has to be based on what you want, what you want to play, and your commitment to the band.

yeah I know what you mean, but I haven't heard the guy play yet, but if he turns out better than me than I'll be happy to let him play drums for the band, but the thing is that only our guitarist Michael has heard him, Jarrod, Tanner, Jeff, and I haven't heard him yet. So i have to rearrange what I said, Michael wants me to be replaced, and as for my commitment, I have been 110% committed to this band since I joined it, I have stayed up long nights finding new beats, writing music and lyrics for our songs, but I understand what your saying BV and thanks for the help.

I know how that feels....when I was a senior in High School, I was kicked out of the band I was with because they wanted a new singer...yeah I used to sing. Hard to believe I know :( yet my voice is a train wreck now...havent sang since I was 21

well... here's there thing... if they are going behind your back and didn't inform you that they might be looking for a new drummer.... how good of friends could they be? If something wasn't working out in a band between 1 member and the rest, they should at least have the respect and courtesy to let that person know and buy them a bus ticket (yes... a Dave Mustaine/Metallica joke).

But I'd say since they didn't include you... you need to do what is best for you. If that's starting up a new badn... then so be it. It'll be hard to trust your band members anymore...

well I just talked about it with Jarrod and Jeff about it and they didn't know about it, Tanner and Michael are brothers so he might know by now, I'm just going to take some time to think about this.

every band needs a manager. :lol I'm just kidding. But seriously if they decide to kick you out after 7 years for no reason, well I know I wouldn't wanna be in that band.

If you're committed to the band as something larger than yourself and committed to your friends, stick with it.  I've been replaced in bands.  I've had trouble staying in bands because of constant moving due to school.  Because of all this, I ended up becoming quite versitile at show promotion, production, live sound and guitar tech work...

If you want to play drums still, do it.  Your love for drums and your being in the band shouldn't be mutually exclusive.  Do what the band needs on the band's time.  Play drums on your own time.  Besides, the new drummer might have great fills, but might need help in other areas.  Take it as an opportunity to learn more about music from another prospective.

BTW... You stole my avatar. :P

I have never been replaced in a band....but if for instance the band I was in asked me to be a rhythm guitar player and let another lead player take over(Never going to happen!)I would say absolutely, one hundred percent NO.If you have been a part of this band for a long time then you should hold at least some sway in the decision making...If not then maybe you should start you own band. That is what I learned a long time ago..Make you own band where you are in controll..this has worked very well for me :)

Tanner and Michael are brothers

That's never a good thing. :lol

Maybe it works in this band, but everyone I know who's ever been in a band with brothers... it never works out. Anyway if I was you I'd leave the band, on good terms though, and start working on making my own. I mean, nothing says you can't be friends with these guys just because you want to play drums, it just means you'll have to find a new band, which might take awhile.

Well, hey Jarrod and Jeff have sided with me, turns out this guy Michael wants is Jason, he's like Michaels best friend, but me and the others can't stand him, and not to brag or anything, I still get the feeling i'm better than him, Jarrod and Jeff even said so.  I haven't talked to Tanner all day so I don't know what he thinks yet.  Michael says he wants it to happen, but Jarrod and Jeff don't, so I guess we'll wait and see.

P.S.>> bands that have brothers in them don't always break up, look at My Chemical Romance, their singer and bassist are brothers but their doing just fine right now.

Sepultura.....

Even though it's still going, Igor and Max split... Max went to Soul Fly.

White Stripes are working out fine.

I agree except for the control part :)  I think everyone should have equal say if the band is going to be serious.

Yes, situations work where there is 1 leader, but people often resent that.

meh... double post

Please don't make me look at them. :lol

Plus, the key words are right now. We still have yet to see if they will last.

First of all, this is an entire group decision, if the others weren't in on it then there should be no reason why you should be replaced. If everybody had decided to boot you then that's a different story. Talk to everybody as much as you can, and like Stealth said, no reason why all of you still can't be friends.

dimmbag and the drummer in Pantera are brothers

anyway on topic you know what you should do

if Mickeal wants another drummer you should tell him he can have the other guy as a drummer in another band so instead of you leaving make him leave

Alright fine, maybe it can be a good thing sometimes, sue me. :p

Oasis, and two local bands that I know, have always had drama due to brothers being in the band. A guy I work with who used to be in a band for 8 years before letting his rock star dream die told me never to go in a band with brothers. He said it was one of the worst choices he ever made (music career wise).

All I'm sayin is, keep a weather eye open. :lol
