If only L.A.I.R didn't suck
so about a month ago my speakers started making this crackling noise and the left speaker is on the fritz so I figured that I get some new ones

I have a $50 dollar gift certificate to circuit city, and I'm looking for a good speaker set $200 dollars or less that will last a while and has quality sound for gaming and music

please give your suggestions

IT's hard to say... Level 9 Sound had Monsoon flat panel speakers... great sound to them. The company is out of business now... and you cannot get them anymore. IMO they are hands down the best I've heard in a LONG TIME.

Bose Companion 3 are supposed to be ok. I'll look on Newegg... there are a couple Altec Lansing sets that are good. There is another company that makes very good speakers, I'll dig up their name for you as well.

try, I think its called Creative labs, I got a really cheap set that sound great, only cost me about £10-£15 (about $30?), got 'em bout 6 years ago, and they still sound great

Yeah, ignore the sound quality, get ones that look pretty!

The signal to noise ratio is 85dB. Not horrible, but still lower than I would buy.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Do you want 2.1 or 5.1?
2. What sound card do you have?

Let me know and I can find you some good options.

those are pretty good.

They fair pretty well among gamers and ratings (from what I've read around the net). I have been looking at those myself when I get a chance to build a new computer next year.

I still wish Level 9 was in business... their Monsoon flat panel speakers (flat coiled) rock!

I was going for 5.1, and my sound card is realtek ac97 audio

In that case those Logitech speakers would fine. You won't hear a difference from a really good set of speakers with that sound card. If you went with an Audigy 2 or X-Fi then I wouldn't suggest those speakers.

What would you suggest? ... that are affordable. Even $150 for a set of speakers can be salty for users.

Well, if you're on a budget and using something like the AC'97 then I would suggest the Logitech Z-4 :

If you have some more money to spend and have an Audigy 2 or X-Fi then I would get the Klipsche Pro Media 2.1:

If you don't have any budget and, at least and X-Fi if not better then I would get a separate receiver and some good louspeaker like Kef or Dynamic, I could go on with good brands. Also, get a Velodyn subwoofer.

another friend suggested this speaker set to me

any good?

I can't find the THD rating but for the price I don't think you could find a better 5.1 system. Not that it really matter with the AC'97 but if you get a better card later they won't sound like crap. :)

yeah, a new sound card is one of the next things on my list of upgrades, I just decided to get the speakers first because the ones that came with the computer kicked the bucket
