Can't get Quake II to work

Ok so i'm trying to install Quake II right but when i put the CD in it comes up with DirectX(tm) Setup then it has a list underneath and one of the things on that list is Direct3D which it says isn't installed so just wondering how do i fix this?

EDIT:Ok so when i double click the Setup.exe and click install it comes up with a box saying "The Win16 subsystem was unable to enter protected mode, DOSX.exe must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in your path".

Mayb e it's too outdated for your computer? You may need an emulator or something.
 
I can't see how Quake II would be to outdated though because i can play the first Red Faction on here hell i can even play Duke Nukem on here.

May just be compatability issues. Have you checked system requirements?
 
What operating system are you using?

You may have to try running it in compatability mode. If you right click the quakeII.exe icon, you should be able to find an option for compatability mode with earlier versions of Windows.

I have no trouble running Quake II on Windows XP Professional 32 bit.
 
^ Yeah, that should solve it.
If you own a 360', however, you can buy Quake 4, which comes with Quake 2 on it as well.

YOu wont be missing much by not playing Quake 3...

Except Quake 3 is one of the greatest games of all time whereas 4 is garbage.

I didn't know that Quake 4 came with Quake 2...

Quake III was only good enough for me to buy Q3: Arena, Quake III: Team Arena, and Quake III: Revolution for the PS2...

You wont be missing much except one of the fastest paced first person shooters ever by not playing Quake 3...

Doesn't matter ive pretty much tryed every thing possible to get it to work but doesn't matter to much i got alot of other games to get through any way like Soldier of Fortune II.

There is one thing that has always confused me about the Quake series is that Quake I is nothing like any of the other games it's all medieval looking while all the others are all Sci-Fi.
 
Cause Quake 1 is unrelated to any of the other games.

But any way you may need to run it on dosbox or something in order for it to work.

and you can get all the quake games on steam dude.

Okay, it's good in that sense, but I was talking about the campaign.

Comment stands though. Quake 4 comes with Quake 2 on the bonus disk, just like if you purchased Doom 3, Doom 1 and 2 came as a bonus.
Ah... you can count on ID to make us happy in some way... at least most the time, I've found.

And if you happen to enjoy Quake 1 for its medieval demon slaying style, go get yourself Hexen or something. You'll get some fun out of that.
 
Doom 3 for the xbox has Doom and Doom II on it?? Do you mean the PC version? I have the xbox version and don't think I've ever seen that.
 
Wha? My friend had the first Doom's on along with the main game for x-box, and when I got Quake 4, it had Quake 2 on it... And I know my copy of Quake wasn't collectors or Special edition, and I'm sure the edition of Dom was standard too... maybe it is an Aus thing?
