Competitive Gaming

That's an extreme example. Look at the majority of competitive gamers. They are just regular people who don't train their bodies like other athletes. They just train their hands and mind. That's it. So no, you don't have to be in the best shape to be able to compete in video games and to be good.
Tell me, what kind of shape was Babe Ruth in? Do you not consider him an athlete because he was in bad shape?

Um, I don't know what you're trying to get at here but I'll try to respond as best I can.

He is an athlete because of the sport he played. He wasn't in the best shape as other ball players, but he was definitely in better shape than a lot of gamers to be able to play baseball. Which taxes your entire body and mind, as well as Football, Basketball, Soccer, etc. Babe Ruth would still hit balls at the cages and practice on the field. If he didn't he wouldn't be able to play baseball well.

As for gamers, all that isn't necessary. You just have to sit or stand in a comfortable position and train your dexterity and reflexes by playing a non-physical game. Unless of course, if it's DDR.

Just put this way. A person that is more physically fit will have the faster reflexes and better mind set than one which is not.

I don't know where you're getting that idea from. I used to be friends with a hockey goalie who was good at his position because he had incredible reflexes. He was a lot, shall we say, rounder than I was, but still a better goalie by far. However, once he stacked up against other goalies who were in better shape, he was not quite as good as them because he could not move his whole body as fast as they could. Being out of shape only hindered him because he needed to move his whole body. With video games, all you have to move is your fingers, and you get better at doing that by moving your fingers. Not by jogging and lifting weights.

Babe Ruth relied heavily on his innate talent for the game, but once again, nobody's that good unless they practice for years and years. Babe Ruth didn't practice running the bases because he figured it was easier to just hit the ball out of the park and walk'em. I don't know if you've ever tried to hit a ball 390 yards before, but let me tell you, no couch potato is going to be able to do that. Training upper body strength, and practicing the batting motion (putting the weight of your whole body behind the ball) is an exercise that is very taxing on your body. Just because an athlete has not trained their whole body to do everything well (ever see a marathon runner enter a dead lift competition?) it doesn't mean their bodies are not trained to perform one physical feat well.

And once again, I don't consider finger dexterity a physical feat. Or conceding that, I don't consider it an athletic one.

You go and think that in a competition one day. You may have fast fingers but you still need those reflexes to back them up.

hey but why can't at least think of videogames as poker or blackjack??? they put them on TV and they held tournaments of card games and they don't even need reflexes..... (sorry if i missed something but i'm to lazy to check what has beeen said XD )

Which you can still train by just playing the game.

I think we already do. I don't consider them sports either.

Exactly. You don't need to train other parts of your body because you don't use other parts of your body.

As I said already... I might even consider some competitive games sports, but I still wouldn't think of gamers as athletes.

On a sidenote, instead of apologizing for not reading the thread before responding, why not just read the thread? Mai also made the poker analogy on the podcast. Old news Zi, old news... :lol

I think the words "competition" and "sport" get mixed around a lot. "Competitive" gaming would be awesome; tournies, teams, sponsors, etc. But, do not for one minute call gaming a "sport"! Like Stealth said, athletes play sports, and gamers are from from athletes {at least from what I have seen}. There is nothing athletic about playing a video game. Yes, there are exceptions, but not enough to change the fact it is not a sport. Sorry if that's been said already, I did not read through the whole thread :D
