discussion... Is the DS going to be what the N64 fell short on?

you know how the N64 story went.... somehow it got a kiddy image, and a rep that no good games were on the system (by far, neither of those are true)......the 3rd party and RPG support dwindled on the N64....

BUT is the DS going to gain all those RPG's, 3rd parties, and somehow regain part of the image the N64 wasn't able to keep?

talk it up.

Hmm...dunno...I haven't seen much to give it more of a mature image. There's only one game I can think of, Another, that would fit outside the so called "kiddie" category. I guess you could say those dating games, Sprung and Feel the Magic, could be said to be more of the mature nature.
It seems to me they are getting some RPGs for the system, Baten Kaitos and Chrystal Chronicals are the only ones that come to mind though. I guess maybe they need to work on that area.

The DS has a ton of rpgs on the horizon, not just those two.

DS RPGs
Baten Kaitos
Xenosaga
Dragon Quest Monsters
Egg Monster Hero
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles DS
Mana Sequel
Animatic (by Arika)
Harvest Moon
Pokemon Diamond
Pokemon Pearl
Shin Megami Tensei
Vandal Hearts
Dark Reflections (developed by MezCo Studios)
Deep Labyrinth (action rpg by Interactive Brains)
Monster Farm Jamboree

There's also a few rpgs that don't have announced titles yet:

RPG from GameArts
RPG from Namco
RPG from Marvelous Interactive

And some that are kind of rpgs but also in other genres:
Animal Crossing DS
Boktai DS

Pokemon Diamond
Pokemon Pearl

Don't these people give up? There has to be thousands of those darn little monsters running around in that Pokemon world by now. I remember back to the original 151 (which I still remember most of) of Red/Blue.

Games were fun though, and ate up lots of my time as a kid. Never did get past Silver though. I have Red, Blue and Silver, but none others, and with the selling of my GBA months ago, that sealed the end.

It would be cool if they actually changed the gameplay somehow, like, say, actually fighting with your pokemon, or something like that. Although I'm sure they still sell like hotcakes, I think they're doing more harm than good for Nintendo's image. I mean, with each new pokemon game comes another reason that Nintendo is for little kids and that Nintendo does nothing but rehash old games.

But Nintendo do produce games that are for children aesthetically, with a usually-simple storyline to boot. The games design aspect of it though is what makes it also suitable for adults too.

Nintendo do rehash Pokémon, and it is aimed at kids, but the games sell millions and are always top-sellers. It would be foolish of them to not milk it. I wouldn't want them to change the combat system in Pokémon apart from possibly allowing you a greater move list. Apart from that, I believe the gameplay to be top notch. While you can moan about Pokémon being a rehash, I suppose the same could be said for the FF games.

FF games at least have interesting and new storylines in each one, as well as jaw dropping cinematics. Their games at least evolve in some ways, but that's beside the point, we're talking about Nintendo and their use of the pokemon license, not Sony or Square Enix or anything else.

I just think pokemon has great potential to be really good game that appeals to gamers young and old. If Nintendo dropped the "kiddy" design of the game with a better storyline and more involving gameplay then they could sell twice as many copies by opening up the series to another demographic. Its foolish to restrict the audience to little kids who have no income to spend on games. Aim it at the teenagers with part-time jobs and with nothing better to spend money on. Aim it at young adults who have jobs and who are looking for entertaining ways to spend their time. Yes they can sell millions without putting any effort into the game, but that's the problem. Unless you work for Nintendo and get a pay raise with each pokemon game sold you should be outraged that they're throwing this tripe at you year after year just because they can. As a consumer we should demand the best products that they can provide us, not understand that they're a business who's just trying to separate us from our hard earned dollars.

No, the pokemon franchise is a prime example of Nintendo putting profits before people. If Nintendo's concerned with the direction the industry's heading in, they should take some of their own advice and stop trying to make a quick buck. On the GBA pokemon games should offer at the very least an average storyline and new gameplay mechanics with each new version. All the pokemon should be included with each update as well as the new ones added, so it at least looks like they're not trying to get you to buy the same game 4 times. They should then bring a game like that over to the GC in full 3d, add in some "maturity", (nothing horrific, make the main character at least a teenager, make the world you travel in a not so friendly place, make an actual plot or storyline to the game instead of the main motive being "to catch them all", and making the pokemon actually die or get physically harmed would make it a hell of a lot cooler too, stuff like that) maybe even add in some real-time combat system or add some more depth into the already existing one, and an online component could be really cool too (but like that's gonna happen anyway).

Who doesn't want to see at least some of that come true?

Stealth, I always wanted a 3D Pokemon. Stadium never did it for me, and I could never understand why anyone would want Snap (no offense to those who have it).

Actually I liked the Stadium games and Pokemon Snap. But Pokemon Collosseum for GC sucked. Bleh. I was looking forward to that game too, but the "rpg" portion of it was totally lame.

If they made a true rpg Pokemon for GC where it was like the GB games but with 3D graphics, that would be cool.
