I was part of the Backbreaker community before I came here. Their forums have been shut down for probably 3 months now. Backbreaker is the only football game ever created that literally has, in my opinion, endless potential if executed properly. The Euphoria engine has nearly endless potential in the sports genre if handled by the right people. The problem is that the developers know as much about the fundamentals of football, as I'd ever care to know about my sister's bra size. They failed on nearly every aspect of football fundamentals. Don't get me wrong though the game does have some bright moments, and unlike any other football game you've ever played, once you win a game...no screw that, once you get your first 1st down, you literally feel like you've earned it. You feel good even when you loose a game, because typically if you loose, its literally your own fault. It is very fun to play if you can overlook the kinks, and obvious sore spots that seemed to get by their testing team.
When I used to play it, I got to the point where I'd only get sacked about 5 times a game, but there were a lot of people who complained about getting sacked nearly 20 times in a game. You just have to know when to get rid of the ball. But I guess its more so about how you are as a player and how much fundamental breakdown you can tolerate. If you can look past the obvious fundamental garbage, Backbreaker can deliver some great moments. I'll list some of the issues (that I can remember) that basically killed the game:
1) 80% of the penalties aren't called. Seriously, I've been facemasked into a 720 spin, on a fly route, and never saw a single flag, yet they'll call roughing the QB when you clearly sacked him.
2) Before they released the patch, receivers literally caught whatever you threw in their direction. Seriously, before the patch, I never saw a single dropped ball. After the patch, balls were literally flying through the back of receivers helmets and through their facemasks. (Side note: The patch is really what broke the game. If you did decide to play this game, I'd advise you not to download the patch).
3) Your QB can't throw on the run.
4) Everyone is the same exact height and weight.
I can go on and on, but I think I'll stop here. All in all Backbreaker was a great attempt at innovation, though unfortunately led by a group of developers who were clearly limited in their knowledge of American Football. The engine was really the only good thing in the game. The Euphoria engine is beautiful.
