Dragon Quest 9 for NINTENDO DS! Yes it's coming to America :)

MegaDrive20XX

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
We reported earlier today that Square Enix would be holding a conference to announce a new Dragon Quest game, but no one quite expected the bomb shell they dropped: Dragon Quest IX, the next sequel in the officially numbered series and not a spin-off, will be arriving on the Nintendo DS.
Rumors suggested the anticipation surrounding Wii and its promise of lower development costs would make Dragon Quest an easy lure -- but apparently rumor mongers were wrong about the platform. Does this mean the Dragon Quest series has abandoned its console roots?

Dragon Quest IX: Protectors of the Starry Sky for the Nintendo DS is being developed by RPG powerhouse Level-5 (known for Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Cloud, and White Knight Story), and will feature 3D graphics and network play. Four players will be able to team up, and the battles are apparently action-based, unlike previous games in the series. Creator of Dragon Quest, Yuji Horii, said at the event that working on the new game brings back the same feelings he had when working on the very first game in the series, twenty years ago. Big words indeed for a very surprising announcement. Horii admitted that he recognizes the limitations of the DS but is doing his best to create a groundbreaking adventure on the platform. He wanted to make clear that DQIX is "not a spinoff or a side story; it's a true part of the series." He says he is shooting to have it ready in 2007.

That's really really awesome news. The DS is so well suited to an RPG of this style, maybe more than any other system. I'll for sure be picking this one up.

Re: Dragon Quest 9 for NINTENDO DS!

This makes me angry - big name RPGs belong on consoles, i'm pissed

The DQ game made for DS is Rocket Slime

Re: Dragon Quest 9 for NINTENDO DS!

Megaton!

Dragon Quest is the biggest rpg series in Japan....over there it's more popular than even Final Fantasy.

It pretty much puts the PSP in a position where it won't ever have a chance to compete with the DS in Japan regardless of what happens.

Go get a DS. They're cheap, they're fun. You have FF3 and DQ9.

Re: Dragon Quest 9 for NINTENDO DS!

I have a DS... and I enjoyed it, but now I can't play at work anymore and I play console at home so it's time to sell

P.S. FF3 blows

Re: Dragon Quest 9 for NINTENDO DS!

All I can say is....finally...and.... thank you Lord almighty!!!!

O.T. And there's also a brand new DQ coming for Wii!

Re: Dragon Quest 9 for NINTENDO DS!

All I can say is blah.

I'm very displeased that Enix didn't choose to release this on more... ideal platforms.. - Though I'm not particularly surprised that they target the "biggest userbase", though Dragon Quest makes its own userbase without regard to such matters..

However, I am even more displeased with the fact that it's an ARPG, maybe even styled similarly to PSO. This is, no doubt, unacceptable for my traditional desires... alas... I would anticipate this out of a side-story title, but out of the primary title in the series? This is too weird. Final Fantasy changes, Dragon Quest doesn't! I could always rely on that. But I suppose times change.

Oh what...it's an ARPG? Silly me, I thought it was just a regular RPG like DQ7,8, etc. Ah well, what can ya' do?

Watch. It still looks "okay", but I'm not agreeing with the re-route back to Chibism and the change to "active" battle on the field... like... crappy FF XII. Shrug.

Lovely new screen shots.

Re: Dragon Quest 9 for NINTENDO DS!

I do not know if this has been mentioned here, but they went back to turn based fighting with DQ9. However, you will see the enemy on screen and upon contact the fight will begin, much like Tales Of Symphonia. I personally think this is a wise decision.
