>:( I envy the stupid, inferior Jakals that go prancing about with their energy sheilds. It's about time we got to use the shield against them. Think of the gaming advantage! Especially during a multilayer. Those capture the flag games were you have to protect your flag via a tight entrance. You can stand in the centre with your shield in front and blast the crap out of anyone who dares to tresspass on your territory. Think about it? :?
 
Jakals..pfft..I just wait 'till they turn and I open up on them, or toss them a grenade, or send them a missile. I know what you mean though, they can get quite annoying. I think having a shield like their's would just make you more of a target for grenade and missile attacks..so it could be good or bad I guess.
 
I agree, they the Jackals may be easy to kill (under some circumstances) and the shield probably would make you an easier target for rockets. But if someone runs at you with a shotty, you over-shield alone wont save you. And think about this. What if you could dual wield it with the energy sword. I've actually dreamt about doing this. Doing such would add a a interesting gladiator feel to the game.
 
Balance is more fun than coolness.

Let's see here, sword and shield.
+Immune to bullets
+Much less susceptible to plasma
+One hit kills at short range
-More vulnerable to rockets
-No long range attack (evened out by the fact ranged attackers can't hurt you, save for rockets)

Sword is too strong as it is, giving you a bullet shield won't make it any better. Now, if, say, your speed is reduced 25% while doing this, or your lunge range is significantly shortened, it might be a cool little BALANCED feature to add.

Here's an example of why balance is crucial. Not with weapons, but with games. Before Halo 2 was patched to version 1.1, in round based objective games, in the event of a tie of 1-1 or 2-2, Red team always won. Always. Regardless of any other factors, Red team won tie games. That means that Red team is better than Blue team in objective games, which is NOT balanced because the Blue team has no advantage over Red team at all.

I think you missed the point. But your actually quite correct. With out balance, there is chaos, or something like that.
There could be other ways in which the shield could be of use. You just need to be creative!

I don't know, I wouldn't say balance is more fun than "coolness," but I would say it's more important in a multiplayer game, especially an online one. As for balanced games being more fun... I've found some games are only fun when they're unbalanced, via something like a God mode cheat.
 
Speaking of cheats, I like using the funny ones like Big head mode or Disco mode. I only use God mode if I'm in serious trouble. Then I go back and do the level again without cheats once I have the hang of the level. But cheats don't make up for gaining natural skill.

On the subject of balance. Tipping the balance in you favour is one of the best and easiest ways to win. Though, I guess you could say that Balance is a sensitive thing that should be taken care of.

I can't bring myself to think of excelling in videogames as a "skill." I dunno, while some games do obviously provide the opportunity for "skilled" players to emerge, it just doesn't seem right to me.

Haha, I don't know what I'm trying to say, but skill just seems an inappropriate word to me.
 
If "skill" doesn't seem the right word to say then how about..... Hmmm?.... Technique. No don't think so. Or maybe it is. Perhaps "overall abilty". Err, I'm confusing myself. I guess its really a self defining word or phrase that is used. Your own opinion in other words.
 
an energy shield would be kinda unorthodox in halo multiplayer, since it's not a weapon would it be like the overshield

probably except you could beat people with it, so you think if they put the shield in they would get rid of oversheilds?

I would guess if they did it be more difficult to hurt someone with human weapons (except rockets and frags) and then covenant weapons would dispatch the shield quickly and it would be harder to stick them with plasma grenades
 
I absolutely despise energy shields, and i like the idea, but c'mon, think about it... Master Chief with an energy shield...? ( MC with Dual SMGS = Bad @$$ ; MC with one SMG and hiding behind a shield = pansey )
 
Even the Master Chief has to protect himself from getting battered. And as much "pansey" as it may seem, the tactical advantage for any player would be benaficial. I was playing Halo2 wth my freinds the other day, and when one of my team mates was about to be blown up, right when he was going to take out a wraith, I jumped in front of the missile, spreaing him, but turning my MC into chunks. And I had my self a energy sword too. Which took me ages to obtain. If I had a sheild, the bulk of the blast may not have killed me, and I could have charged towards the attacker.

I didn't make myself clear enough... I would hate the energy shield idea on single player campaign... on multiplayer it would be great. Because there's strategy involved instead of just run and gun like on the campaign. It would be odd for MC to be hiding from grunts and jackals.
 
I would get the energy shield and an energy shield and id be like frggin imbossible! :p i i'd kill you all!
