Excite Truck Truckin' blows

Alright, I finally had my first "Wii" experience yesterday at Ebgames. Unfortunatly the game I played was obviously not a system seller (at least I hope it's not) so my judgement on the Wii itself will wait for some time still. However, Excite Truck itself was a very poor game in my opinion, and not just because of a total lack of polish or design, but even at the fundamental level it felt wrong.

I guess first off I should say that the Wii-mote was much shorter and fatter than I expected, and of course, too small for me. The d-pad, while still better than the GC controller's, was still too small, and my thumb fumbled around with it a bit. This is more or less immaterial for Excite Truck, because the d-pad is not used (kind of), but it could be problematic in future games.

Either way, the mechanism that Excite Truck relies on (that is the tilting one) was either a gross oversight or far too abstract for my brain to comprehend. At first it was easily the most unintuitive control scheme I have ever played. I would either over or under turn every single time. I got a little bit better at this as time went on, but it still never felt right. It was hard enough trying to figure out where exactly my hand positions were "level" and doubly so when my vehicle was swerving all over the road. I spent a good twenty minutes with the game, and while it wasn't exactly in ideal conditions, the gameplay itself (the innovation thereof) seemed to be rushed, untested, and very unfun. I never really did get the hang of it, nor was there much motivation to try to get the hang of it.

It also didn't help that my friend and I couldn't race against any cpu opponents (perhaps we missed the option?) and that the draw distance was ridiculously short. The backgrounds were bland and static, and the courses themselves wholly uninteresting. So in short, they dropped the ball in the graphis and gameplay department, which is very dissapointing from a "next-gen" game.

They should really have Wii-sports playable at EB instead. I'm still looking forward to taking that badboy for a spin.

Excite truck has received good reviews...but honestly, I didn't find it too "exciting." So I'm not bothering to pick this up. Wii sells its games based on control schemes and people seem to like this, but I've never been much for racing games like this other than Mario Kart. If I want an unrealistic racing experience, that's what I'll go with. Otherwise...if I want realistic, I'll go with Gran Turisimo. There's no reason to play other racing games in my opinion.

But...it's launch..every launch has a racing title or two that are mediocre, a couple really good games and a couple meh games.

I guess I like that it plays a little like Burnout. You get stars for doing stuff like drifts and crashes and tree runs. But honestly yeah, it takes more than one 20 minute session to really get a grip on the controls. I think it's a lot more fun once you get the hang of it.

Well, every review I've come across has bashed Excite Truck pretty bad. Haven't played it myself, but I doubt I want to. And it is only launch. Unfortunately, I think 1up.com did a little review on worst launch lineups, and the Wii is nearly bringing up the tail end. We'll have to wait a bit to see what the system can really do and if things get a little more fine-tuned.

wait... this game doesn't blow... It's not the best... but it's definitely not THAT bad. BUT you have to like arcade style racers though to enjoy this. Arcade style meaning in the vein of Rush, California Speed...etc.

I think the bad reviews are coming from people expecting a Gran Turismo or Project Gotham Racing type game, and that's totally missing the point of Excite Truck. It's not supposed to be some hyper realistic driving sim with uber graphics and all that. But at the same time, it's not a tech demo, either. There's a lot of stuff to unlock, and it's not as easy as you would think. Some of the tracks are pretty difficult. Hmm. Not sure where I meant to go with that. But anyway, I enjoy Excite Truck, so I guess it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

yeah... it's just a fun game to play.  My buddy and I were playing it last night for awhile... and it's just a blast.

It's not a superb piece of gaming goodness... but it does well in the fun factor department and that's one of the most important factors in buying a game (IMO) ... above sound, and graphics.  Even then... it doesn't look horrible and the sounds aren't too bad.  The menus are kind of lacking though...

I like arcade racers, but I did not like this game. I really think it is that bad.

As my friend who played it with me pointed out, it felt like an incomplete demo. It felt as though the game's sole purpose was to show what could make a fun racing game if it underwent development for another half a year or so.

In my opinion, absolute garbage. It flunks in gameplay, graphics, sound, and fun factor. I can think of no reason anyone would want to play this game.

When I saw excite truck, I thought Motor Storm looked even better. Nintendo is making a mistake when they think that you need a cheap system and a new controller to have the best game play. The other next gen systems can still have good game play (and do) without a gimmicky controller.

Ok, this a question for all the haters:

If having motion sensing controllers is gimmicky, why did Sony take out rumble in favor of a tilt sensor? They must obviously think there's something to what Nintendo is doing or they would have left the rumble in somehow.

Honestly, I want to know why Nintendo's controller having motion sensing capabilities is gimmicky while Sony's Sixaxis controller is somehow 'teh roxxors'. I'd say that's a double standard.

At least wait until you play Zelda before you declare the Wii and the way it controls as total suckage. Shooting the bow and arrow with the Wii Remote is ungodly accurate. I love it! I can make headshots and everything.

The controller is great for many things. I just think that good graphics don't equal bad game play. Nintendo does have other controller options for applications in which the wiimote is not up to the task.

BTW, sony's sixaxis is nothing special to me either ;-)

It's cool man. I'm sorry if I came off kind of defensive. But honestly, I don't think it's fair to the Wii if you review it just based on Excite Truck, just as it's probably not fair to judge the PS3 by Motorstorm or NBA 07 (the only games playable in the demo kiosks).

Actually, I think the Wii is great. Lots of good games coming for it in the future and it has a few good ones now. Smash Bros, Metroid 3, Super Mario Galaxy, etc.

And their cover-up was "Nobody even cares about rumble".

I don't know about you, but when I was playing FFVIII, I loved the rumble whenever I did Squall's limit break.

hm... not sure what to say there. It's not that bad. I've got a few people that are having fun with it.

Granted the in game menus are bland... and some textures aren't that great... but it really it not THAT bad. At worst it's a mediocre game.

As I stated in my initial post, this wasn't a commentary on the Wii itself, but on the wasted use of the Wii's potential on this game. I'm reserving judgement on the Wii until I play Wii Sports.

Sony is silly. I consider the loss of the rumble feature to be one of the great failings of the PS3. You don't really notice the rumble on games when it's there, but you do notice it when it's not there. Substituting it for some gimmicky tilting sensor was obviously a short notice decision and a cop-out. It is not "teh roxxors" and unless I'm mistaken, no one else here in this thread is advocating it one way or the other.

I am blatantly and specifically "hating on" Excite Truck, but that's because I think it's a horrible game. And, unfortuneatly for me, it was the first game I played on the Wii, so "dissapointed" doesn't really impress upon you what I felt when I first played it. Don't misconstrue what I think about this game for what I think about the Wii, although I do think it is a prime example of how "different controls" don't make up for a game that drops the ball in nearly every other area.
