Fable, Why the Criticism?

Wow, first of all I had no idea they were ever planning on making multiplayer for Fable. Good call on that one. But by the time the game was released you still knew beforehand there was no multiplayer, but that's kind of pointless to mention now anyways with your new list of games.

If you do enjoy playing through the SP in games like Conker, or Ninja Gaiden, or even the first Splinter Cell game, how can you say that Fable has no replay value because it plays out the same? All the SP experiences you just listed play out the exact same the second time through (I haven't played all of them, perhaps some do give extra incentives to play through again, so they don't apply yo what I'm saying), so what makes a game like Conker have replay value for you and a game like Fable not?

Nice point. Same argument was goin on a few days ago at a friends house....cause he said Jade Empire had no replay value. You get to make EVERY choice in there! How can it not have replay value? Also, there's different cut scenes depending on if you're good/evil/in between.

Well, I base replay value basically on how fun a game is to play through again and again. Fable just didn't have that. I could see how alot of people could enjoy doing it, but I was disappointed after finding out it lacked alot of the stroy depth I was hoping for. not from hype, but the fact it has 2 endings, niether of which are based on being good or evil, but off of a single choice you make.

Ok, well, that I do understand... somewhat. I also agree the story really isn't anything special, but to me that isn't a big deal. So for you, it's not so much that Fable has no replay value, it's just that you don't like the story very much in the first place?

Yeah, kinda. I got both endings just by reloading and beating the final boss, which took absolutely no effort at all.

Woah, let's not get too in depth here, some of us haven't completed the game yet and are actually enjoying the story. :lol

And ya, boss battles have been very easy thus far. I especially like how "rolling" will make you immune to any attack, even if it still comes in contact with you. Those trolls for example, that throw stuff at you, I just run right up to them and hit them, every time they pound the ground I just roll towards them and I don't take any damage at all.

The boos battles are all jokes. Heck, combat is a joke itself. After you learn the usefullness of rolling you are set. Or once you get to the point where nothing ccan touch you anyways.

Well, I find the combat incredibly fun. And when there's swarms of guys (especially Hobs or whatever their called, the guys with the wizards that shoot stuff at you) with long range attackers as well as short range, it can be challenging to not get hit. And they did create incentive to excel at combat to the point where you really don't get touched with the combat multiplier dealy.

It's still super fun, and some elements of it are challenging. I can especially see the challenge if I had chosen to be a wizard or archer or thief or something like that.

Hey Stealth, I am curious if you have ever played MW, or better yet, MW game of the year edition? I really think if you liked Fable you would love MW. Don't be scared off by the talk of MW taking 300+ hours to complete, it would take that long to complete everything, but the main quest will only run you about 40-50 hours, plus about another 100 to complete each expansions main quest if desired. I won't give away to much but let's just say you can be anything you want in MW..Hey you wanna be a werewolf? well, go get bit by one. Wanna be a vampire? same deal. Wanna play a pure Mage who uses no weapons or armor? done. A straight warrior who uses nothing but long swords and heavy armor? done. A thief, an archer? got em'. Basically anything you could ever wanna be in a video game you can be in MW, that is it's beauty. And the one thing about MW that really blows my mind is its story and all the lore involved, it's just utterly amazing. Hopefully you will be pursuaded to play/buy it, and if you already know all this than I just wasted 5 minutes lol..

Haha, ya, I have played it once, and I didn't think too much of it. I thought the controls were fairly clumsy, the graphics quite sub-par, and overall the game seemed kind of boring. Plus it reminded me of MMORPG's with never ending levelling up and that sort of thing, which really isn't my thing. However, that was a long time ago and I am willing to give it another shot, I just don't have the time right now to get into any new games, let alone one that could take 300 hours to complete, as 10 hour games usually take me 20 to complete. :lol

Yea I can agree with that Spartan. It can become overwhelming very quickly but there is plenty of ways to tame that. I think alot of newer MW players try to do everything in one game, and the end result is usually similar; they get swamped with 2 many quests and they start over. And sure, it's not nearly as pretty as Fable but it's pretty obvious why I would assume. But trust me, once you get later in the game and you start seeing the massive structures such as the Daedric Shrines, you will see where the focus was put as far as graphics. Clunky controls? If I play it in 3rd person view the controls are very wierd, but in 1st person view {which it's meant to be played in} I find the controls just the same as any FPS basically. Alot of new MW players find it boring as well because at first you're basically thrown into this giant world with no idea where to go or what to do. Again, once you understand the game mechanics this is a non issue. You can freelance {travel town to town asking NPC's for work}, you can join guilds of your choice {thieves guild, fighters guild, etc} or you can just jump into the MQ. Once you start getting assigned work the game starts essentially. Never ending levelling up? Nope. You could beat the game at around level 8, or level 1 if you are sly. I just love how you can truly do anything in MW. Heck, if a store owner rips you off, just sell him a nice piece of clothing with a spell effect "paralyze on self", he will put it on after you sell it to him, and now, you can loot his whole store while he stands there paralyzed unable to do anything, hahaha. A little imagination and creativity go a looong way in MW. I'm rambling, but I think you get the notion that I love this game and I hope others will give it the time so your minds can be just as blown away!!

Ya, I understand why the graphics in MW suck, but that still doesn't excuse it for me. And ya, I was playing in 3rd person, I'm not a big fan of FP games, unless it's an FPS, and even then I usually think the game would be better as a 3rd person shooter. However, I am intrigued by this "travel from town to town and work random jobs" aspect that you mentioned. If I actually sat down with the game I would probably take the time to get into it, when I tried it those many years back I think it was one of the first times I played an Xbox, so I was kinda like "ok, what's this game all about? That's cool, let's try the next one" so I obviously wasn't in the right state of mind to play MW.

I will give it a shot, when I have the time...

Yea, again I agree that initially the graphics aren't too great but I assume you didn't even make it out of the first town so I take your opinion on the graphics with a grain of salt :D I don't wanna argue about the graphics but I emphasize that this game would NOT have been possible with better graphics; it is 10 sq miles, has around 200 dungeons, features over 1,600 npc's, about 20 major cities, and countless other structures scattered across the land, and that is just MW, not the expansions!! And take into account that in each house/building you can lay out 256 items for decoration and you start to get a grasp of how better graphics were just not a feasible option. This game pushes that big black box to its absolute peak, anything more would have been impossible. I know it ain't purty but it's what's inside that counts right?! Well Stealth I hope you do get some free time to progress a bit in the game and I would be more than happy to help you get started with creating a character and headed in the right direction. I'm open for PM or w/e. Good luck.

EDIT: Man I butchered that lol..

I know it ain't purty but it's what's inside that counts right?!

I agree to a point. :lol

I mean, I never sit down to play some Super Mario Bros. 3 and complaing about the graphics not being good by today's standards, but at the same time on an Xbox I do have standards that I expect to be met. And what good is playing the role of a vampire in a fantastical world if you don't even look like a vampire and the extremely vast world you explore looks dull no matter where you go?

I will definitely give this game a go before I comment on the graphics too much, but graphics could very well be an issue for me.

Have a look at the MW forum once, look how many members they have, look at how many people bought and loved MW. Do you really think man, like, logically thinking here, that if the game looked THAT bad throughout it would gain such a giant, global, fanbase? Think about it. You're blowing this graphic thing way, way, way out of proportion.

Well the graphics ARE just horrible. When I take my character out in 3rd person, he walks like he's constipated. Putting that aside, it has alot of fun game play elements and the ability to do whatever you want.

Exactly Strubes!! I guess I was being a bit hard on Stealth. I have to understand that I played MW about 3 years ago, long before I played really pretty games like Ninja G, Crimson Skies, and so on. So in other words it is probably harder for Stealth to get used to the graphics since by now his eyes are so used to seeing later Gen xbox titles :)
