Farewell EGM 1989-2009 (20 Years)....or is it??? UPDATE!! EGM is BACK!

:'( I'll never forget their awesome EGM 2 January 1994 issue which had the sweetest 8 page preview of SAMURAI SHODOWN 2

January 2009 will be their final issue.

Within hours of our earlier post regarding 1UP's reported sale to the Hearst-owned UGO network, the deal was confirmed in individual press releases from both entities. Additionally, Ziff-Davis has made official the closure of EGM after nearly 20 years of publication. It's January issue -- currently on sale -- will be its last.

1UP editorial director, Sam Kennedy, is quoted in the release, saying that the site's staff is "extremely excited to join the UGO team." UGO's release states that 1UP.com will operate as a separate entity and implies that its current staff will remain in place. The sale to Hearst also includes GameVideos.com, MyCheats.com and GameTab.com.

The shuttering of EGM -- the oldest multi-platform games magazine in the US -- leaves GamePro and Game Informer as the last bastions of what, with today's news, continues to be the dying breed of print media.

Sad news! EGM was actually a pretty good mag back in the day. I am glad to say I kept all my old issues.

Re: Farewell EGM 1989-2009 (20 Years)

That sucks. I love EGM. I love my free subscription to EGM! Oh well, this last one should be a good one.

Re: Farewell EGM 1989-2009 (20 Years)

Quite sad indeed.

I'm not a big fan of magazines, video game related or otherwise, but I have been known to peruse the occasional EGM magazine, even read an article or two.

RIP.

Re: Farewell EGM 1989-2009 (20 Years)

*sadface* Why... Of all the crappy game magazines out there, why the ONLY one that I really like.

I better get a refund for the mags I didn't get then.

Hm the responses on Twitter and Joystiq and others is quite shocking, I feel bad for the workers of EGM and for those let go on 1Up.

This raises an interesting point...I wonder what they're gonna do with the people who paid for subscriptions recently?

Re: Farewell EGM 1989-2009 (20 Years)

They will do like all other magazine companies do, not offer refunds :( Because the magazine isnt transferring to another publisher. :(

So people are just going to get a letter saying "Sorry for the inconvenience, but we can't honor our subscription"?

Re: Farewell EGM 1989-2009 (20 Years)

I Havent ever heard in any subscritpion service them giving back the money one paid for a subscription. Its not like were paying off on a Bedroom Set, or Dining Room set to a bank or something. At most one would have spent 12.99-24.99 and January would be there first issue (if they were even accepting subscriptions last month*), so they could only be entitled to a refund of a small amount of money. That money would be paying the editors and other infrasture so it most likely cant be refunded.

EGM is better than GamePro, so that's a bummer. Game Informer is ok sometimes.

But technically, there's also still Play for multiplatform magazines.

No matter how small it is, it should be paid. I can see law suits coming.

Re: Farewell EGM 1989-2009 (20 Years)

I dont think they did any type of refund for the Ziff Davis PC Gaming Magazine that ended in 2007 nor for their other ones that ended.
