Gamecube recommendations, suggestions, and questions.

OK...I have come across a deal to get a Platinum GC with two controlers, two mem cards, two extension cables, and two games...the Mario Kart thingy..and the Mario Golf one...all new and in box...traded to me for my copy of KOF2k1 AES.

My wife wants the cube...I want to play resident evil 4...KOF2k1 is easily replacable..and much more affordable on MVS...so I traded. It should arrive in the mail today.

So tell me oh legion of GC fans and supporters....what games are worth haiving on this system? I haven't played any GC games since the launch titles, and Metroid Prime.

I'm thinking Zelda...maybe...I hear this Eternal Darkness is good...someone here want to elaborate on these two titles for me..tell me are they worthy? And what other games are actually worth having? How is Paper Mario...? Is the new Metroid any different than Prime was...besides the light/dark gimmick?

Just drop any suggestions on what games you feel are the best to own on the GC, possibly do me a top 5 or top 10 in order of best-->worst...any help is appreciated.

Eternal Darkness I'd recommend, if not just for it's great storyline. The spells that are used for solving puzzles and for combat seperate it from any other survival horror game, as does the story and the insanity meter. The downsides are that the combat can be a bit repetitive, the game only takes around 12 hours to complete (although there are small incentives to complete it thrice) and it isn't really scary, like RE can be. There are a few jumpy moments, but it doesn't feel as tense as other horror games. It's definitely one worth playing at some point, especially if you can pick it up for cheap, which you should be able to now.

Zelda is a must-buy for anyone with a 'Cube imo. It's a bit on the easy side but it's one of the best games I've played this gen. Great puzzles, great exploration-based gameplay, great art style and animation, and great controls.

If you're into shmups, then Ikaruga is one to get if you can find it. It's hard, but the puzzle-like chaining system and polarity change make it great.

You said you had played the launch games. How about Super Monkey Ball? That's got something for everyone. It can be challenging to newby gamers and hardcore alike.

If you're into racing games then F-Zero GX is another must-buy. Extremely fast and intense with responsive controls and enough depth to the handling for it to take you a while to master. Couple this with rollercoaster-style tracks, 30 racers per race, custom ships and logos and you have a top game. Is a bit of a hard one.

My top 10 would be:

1. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
2. F-Zero GX
3. Pikmin
4. Metroid Prime
5. Viewtiful Joe
6. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
7. Super Monkey Ball
8. Ikaruga
9. Viewtiful Joe
10. Super Mario Sunshine

ok... top 5-10.

What kind of games are you all into the most?

IE Fighting:
Soul Calibur 2

Shooters:
Ikaruga

FPS:
Time Splitters 2
Metal Gear Solid 2

RPG's (maybe in this order....):
Baten Kaitos
Skies of Arcadia
Tales of Symphonia
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

Racers:
Burnout1 and 2

Others (not necessarily in order because its hard for me to place them best to least best :lol ):
1.)  Zelda: Wind Waker (Not sure if #1, but its a good thing to get... plus the new zelda coming out looks awesome)
2.) Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 (if you don't get these..... your collection is worthless.  quite good gaming here)
3.) Animal Crossing (watch out... one of the most addictive games ever.  Not as addictive since less are addicted.. but its still addicting.. make sense  :?)
3.) Super Smash bros melee (tied for 3rd)
4.) Eternal Darkness
5.)  Resident Evil 4, RE1, RE0 (in that order)
6.) Mario Tennis (addictive)
7.) Paper Mario 2
8.) Ikaruga (enough said)
9.) Pikmin #1 and #2
10.) Metroid Prime 1 / 2
11.) Viewtiful Joe 1 / 2
12.)  Rogue Squadron 2
13.) Phantasy Star Online ep 1/2 (good Sega game... if you want it cheaper, get plus @$30 new, otherwise the original is much more expensive)
14.) F-zero GX (even though I didn't like Sega's take on it too much... its still good... and VERY fluid)
15.) Freedom Fighters (I had A LOT of fun with this title)
16.) Super Mario Sunshine (so many people look down on it... but its definitely a good game IMO).
17.) Mario Golf
18.) Splinter Cell
19.) Luigi's Mansion
20.) Kirby's air Ride
21.) Metal Arms (I don't know why... but I had fun with this title)
22.) Defender (same as metal arms)
23.) NHL Hitz 2002 (I am not sure why.... but this game rocks inside and out and beats all the other NHL Hitz games.  Fun stuff)

that list should get you started.

If you like rpgs at all, you have to get Tales of Symphonia. ToS is easily my favorite rpg of all time.   :)

Anyway, I'd say my top 10 recommendations would be:

1) Tales of Symphonia
2) Resident Evil 4
3) Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
4) Baten Kaitos
5) Super Smash Bros. Melee
6) Mario Power Tennis
7) Paper Mario
8.) Animal Crossing
9) Soul Calibur II
10) Pikmin 2

Cool..thanks for the recommendations guys, I got the cube today in the mail...so far its aight..Mario Double Dash is actually pretty darn fun...the golf is so-so though.

So far its looking like I want Zelda, Eternal Darkness, RE4 of course..and prehaps an RPG to get started.

Mai, could you elaborate on TOS...what type of battle system does it have? How long is the game? What style of graphics...2D or 3D?

Thanks guys ;)

Mario Kart: DD is a must for multi-player mayhem.

Mario Golf is fun and light-hearted, but slower paced. It's somewhat relaxing to play though.

Those are the only games that I'm really into on the Cube though. My parents also have Metroid Prime (great graphics and sound, I despise the controller arrangement though), Kirby's Airride (awesome graphics, control is not as intuitive as Mario Kart though), Luigi's Mansion (seems fun, I think I played through a few hours of it) and the Zelda collector's disk. If you're familiar with the NES and N64 Zelda games, you might want to try to scare up a collector's disk. Monkey Ball is trippy, but gets old quickly. I think it would be more entertaining to children. Sonic Mega Collection is another one to pick up if you enjoyed the old Sega Sonic games.

The only other games that had piqued my interest were Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Mario Power Tennis and Mario Party 5/6.

I played PSO to death on DC actually. Mario Kart DD is fun..I'm enjoying it thus far, haven't tried it multiplayer yet though. The golf is relaxing..I can agree with that, I played the first two tounrys a while ago, I'll put more time into the both of them in a bit.

Blue...how is Baten Kaitos better? I read a really bad review for it in EGM a while back..something about a cliche boring story.

I had Luigis Mansion back when I used to own a lauch GC...it was fun..my wife is actualy asking me to get it again..I bet its cheap now days..

Also I have played through the Metal Gear remake on GC as well...it was great..but I doubt I'll buy it again right now..

So far I maintain interest mainly in RE4, Paper Mario, Eternal Darkness, and Zelda...with an opening for a as-of-yet decided RPG.

Tales of Symphonia vs. Baten Kaitos....personally I prefer ToS. I played through ToS twice before I even touched any other game, and BK...well I have started on, but I haven't been able to really get into it. It's not as charming as ToS.

Mai, could you elaborate on TOS...what type of battle system does it have? How long is the game? What style of graphics...2D or 3D?

The battle system is real-time and does not feature random encounters. You can always see an enemy before you get to it, and therefore you can choose whether you want to fight or not. But usually, because the battling is so fun, you'll want to fight anyway. At least that's how it was for me. Lloyd is the default and I really like playing as him because he uses two katanas and he can learn a lot of cool moves and do a lot of damage. But if you don't like Lloyd, you can choose to play as one of the other characters, be it Collette, Raine, Genis, Sheena, Zelos, Kratos, Presea, or Regal. Another neat thing is that you can do multiplayer during the battles...3 people can play along with you! :)

The length depends on how much you are willing to put into it. The first time I beat it it took about 60 hours. I did most of the sidequests and ended up around level 70 or so. The advertisement was that ToS was an 80 hour rpg, and that could certainly be the case if you did all the sidequests.

As far as graphics go, it's 3D and cel-shaded. The character designs and everything were done by a pretty well-known anime artist (Kosuke Fujishima), so the whole game feels like an anime. And there's a few fully anime cut-scenes.

Here's a few links to threads where we discussed ToS that have some more details.

Try playing multi-player with your wife or when you have company over. It seriously gets to be a riot!

It runs for about $20 at most places I've seen it as a "Gamecube Player's Choice" game.

yea... I have a luigi's for $12 used up in the shop right now.

Just a question, what did the reviewers saw was bad about the Baten Kaitos?

from everyone that has played it.... people seem to really dig the game.
as for being better that TOS... I was just saying that to counter mai :lol (as a joke).... really... I think they are both good.

I have only played both A LITTLE bit though... not extensive time into them because I do not own them.  Probably a couple hours in between both.

@ Grindspine.... we gotta have you back over man :D lets play some MKDD, the wife, you, and I again :lol that was pretty fun.

I like most of these games as well as the next person but what happened to Sonic Adventure 2 battle? I mean it may be childish but it's a good game. Not to mention endless because of the chaos. and wait until november. Sega's putting out a new game!

I purchased a PS1 just for Metal SLug 1 and Street Fighter Alpha 3. The load times for both of those games kinda sucked, so I ended up selling the system a the games I had. So with the Gamecube, I bought a couple of PS1 remakes I never played back then, and they look really good.

But Ikaruga and Crazy Taxi are a must haves.

I'm really looking forward to playing Metal Gear Solid: Twin Sankes. I need some extra time. ::D

F-zero is a must play.

Rogue Leader is also fun.

Smuggler's Run: Warzones is a good way to kill half hour.

For everything else there's Super Smash Brothers.

Killer 7:

One hell of an engrossing story that's more confusing than anything else you'ver ever played. Trust me, you won't know what the hell is going on, and enjoy every minute of it.

I second Nova's recommendation of Killer 7. It's one of the most unique games I've played in a long time. It took a long time to come out, but it's totally worth it.
