NEW YORK — Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at his downtown Manhattan residence, according to the New York City Police Department. He was 28.

NYPD spokeswoman Stephanie Jaramillo told FOXNews.com that Ledger was discovered by his housekeeper at his apartment at 421 Broome Street in the Soho section of New York City and was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m. EST.

Jaramillo declined to comment on the cause of death, saying only that "the investigation is still ongoing."

But The New York Post reported that Ledger died of a possible drug overdose and his apartment was strewn with pills. Law enforcement has confirmed to celebrity gossip site TMZ.com that prescription pills were found in his bedroom.

Ledger had an appointment for a massage at his Manhattan apartment, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told The Associated Press. The housekeeper went to let Ledger know the masseuse had arrived and found him dead, according to Browne.

The apartment is listed as a three-bedroom Soho loft with a rent of $23,000, according to real estate broker Corcoran.

o Actor Heath Ledger Dead at 28

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met his wife, actress Michelle Williams, in 2005. Ledger and Williams had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

Ledger's roles include the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball" and had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot." He was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I am saddened by this, as he starred in one of my favorite films of all time, Lords of Dogtown.

I was a little worried when I saw it was from fox news but I looked it up and he's dead. I'm just shocked. I can't believe that he's dead. He's an amazing actor. :(

(From the news) The anchor said that Ledger was haunted by his character and how demonic and how he had no morals had him up at night and to the point where he had to take medicine to calm down. I just can't believe he's dead.

(And on a selfish note which will haunt me for a while, what will happen to Batman 2??)

I'm assuming it was the joker character? I haven't seen any other Heath Ledger movies. Batman will obviously be his last great film. From what I've been hearing he really nailed the Joker.

Unless they get someone else to play the Joker, he's done in the series. Which is unfortunate because I heard they wanted him to be in other Batman movies.

Yep, the joker. They (the news crew) also said that he was jittery when talking about his character. He was really jumpy since he got casted for Joker perhaps?

From another site they say the filming had already been completed on the new Batman movie.

I am really sad! He was a great actor, Mai and I just yesterday were talking about buying A Knight's Tale to add to our Heath ledger collection. This is really shocking.

I was shocked...I thought it was some kind of joke when I heard it on the news. :(

He was an amazing actor. It's sad to know we won't see him in anything again.

I don't think anything will happen to Dark Knight, maybe just a "dedicated to" or something like that. I also think the idea that the character of the joker is what made him kill himself is pretty silly. I know to get into character he really needed to get into the mind of a demonic sadist, but that doesn't mean he would become suicidal. No one kills themselves because they play a bad guy in a movie.

So yea, went into school today and everyone was sad of his death. They even said it was unexpected, yea right... The official account of death was "Accidental Overdose" not suicide. It's sad though almost everyone that I talked to today their first reaction was: "What's gunna happen to Dark Knight?" I think this is really sad that people are more worried about movies than a person dying. Oh yea, if you're wondering Dark Knight is fine its in post production.

I think I screwed my earlier reply so I will do it over. Please don't take this the wrong way,but it ticks me off that whenever a celebrity gets hurt, crumbles into addiction,or sadly dies, that's all people talk about day in and day out.Don't get me wrong,I'm sure Mr.Ledger was a good man,and certainly a fine actor,I have the deepest sympathy for his loved ones,I truly do.God forbid a 4 month old baby that dies horribly in a house fire,or that some poor soul that has mouths to feed dies in fatal car accident should receive so much attention.

Once again don't misunderstand me,I'm don't mean to sound cold and harsh, but Mr. Ledger's soul is no more valuable to God or me than any other living creature. The tragedy here is not that Mr.Ledger died,it's that a human died.

God bless his soul and comfort his loved ones as well.

Thank you.

You never had an earlier reply, and that was harsh. The tragedy is that Heath died, because that also means a human died, but it elaborates. >_>

How was it harsh? There are people all over the world dying. That's life. Why should people dwell so much on the death of someone they only knew through movies?

He was probably a good person. If someone bad dies, that's...good(though ironic), when someone good dies, it's a bigger deal. And why should people dwell on the death of someone they knew only through movies? They have to. The whole country can't dwell on your grandma's death, they didn't know her. Imagine if you were the family too. Gonna tell everyone to just forget about it in a day?
