I'm just curious what people heres feelings are towards emualtion and roms.

Me personaly I dislike them, I think they are a poor representation of the actual game, and never "feel" right. I guess I can see people using them as a sort of reference for old arcade classics, or to try out games b4 you buy them in the case of extremely expensive vintage games.

But let me know what YOU think.

^

I've downloaded a fair amount of roms back in the day, but they didn't give the companies any money any more. I have none as I speak.

Never have I used them... and never have I tried. I own and have bought all my games.

I don't use them for getting screen shots..etc.

If consoles and games always worked perfectly, I would be against them. However, my good ol' Sega Genesis and NES will never run under their own power again, and thus, roms are good to preserve classics.

I also occasionally download a rom of a game I've never tried, but that's very rare. Right now for emulators and roms I have a NES emulator and Genesis one, and I have 4 roms. Ninja Gaiden, SMB3, NHL 97 (all of which I own but don't work anymore), and Shining Force 2 which I was told was like Fire Emblem (which I own) except good, and I agree.

I think it is a really great way of preserving classics and giving people a chance to play games they might not normally would have. I don't download any current games simply because I am morally opposed to that, but I have in the past downloaded roms for the Snes/Genesis that I didn't own without feeling any moral reprehension. I only get one or two at a time now, and its usually for nostalgic purposes than anything, so 3/4 roms I get I've owned at some point.

BTW BV, if you can find me a copy of Secret of Mana 3 for the Snes in English I will buy the system and the game from you.

Doesn't seem like one, I think he's actually asking. Didn't think SoM3 was ever in english, but I don't know that.

At one point I downloaded NES roms that I own the original game of because my mom wanted to play those games, however she wanted a controller to play it with and the roms were lost in one of the reformats.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with what Stealth said. My NES, Genesis, and SNES still work, but I know some people aren't as lucky, and I'd rather they be able to play some of their old favs through emulation than not at all. And if my NES, Genesis, and SNES break and I can't find a replacement, it's nice to know that I'll still be able to play them in some form.

if its not... tell me the US title and I can track it down.
I am pretty good at tracking games down (US side).
I am getting better @ the Japanese side.

Pretty good replies so far. Just to clarify my own viewpoint, I used to be heavily into Emulation, worked for emuparadise.org, opped one of the largest rom chans on IRC, had several thousand roms...ect. But as I got older and wiser..and able to afford alot of stuff I couldn't when I was a teenager, I began to see that they were just not the same as playing the actual game on the actual hardware.

I can understand, and to some point validate arcade emulation. Not so much console emulation however. Very few people can afford to own an arcade cabinet of their favorite arcade games that are no longer around, for these lovers of arcades from an era gone by..I can understand emulation.

I also understand some people use roms to repair old arcade boards by re-burning the faulty eproms with the rom images. And alot of people use them for screen shots, I think either of these uses are fine, and not at all bad. As a back-up a rom image can be a valuable thing to have around.

But when it comes to console emulation, just to get out of buying the game..., I draw the line. But I can understand someone playing a rom of some $700 game..to make sure they want it before shelling out $700 ect. But many people are just cheap and would rather have something for free than to pay for it, I think thats wrong.

But I stand firm today on my feelings that emulation is not as good as the real thing, never has been and frankly never will be. Its so much more pleasing to own an obscure system and those obscure games you love, than it is to play it on a PC emu.

They're kind of a guilty pleasure for me. I agree that NES (and systems as old as/older than) roms are ok if you can't get hold of a working system, but I also feel like it's just spitting in the eye of the developers who made the original game. I have some NES roms, most of them are of games i've once owned and played to death during my NES days but can no longer get a hold of...but there's a couple where I was just curious. Needless to say, one day i'll try to get hold of a good working NES anyway, and i'll purchase the games that I have roms of.

I voted "good way for preserving old arcade classics", but only if you've had a lot of experience with the game and/or own or plan to own it in the future. Either way, i'm still a bit guilty. :-\

I agree with the Doc, however I want to add that I have tried them. My problem was that, besides they didn't feel the same, they also usually never worked or the graphics were all screwed up. That really blew away any appeal they could have had for me.

is this a sarcastic enquiry?

100% serious. That is probably my favorite game of all time but I've only been able to play it via emulation.

The Japanese game was called Seiken Densetsu 2 (no the 2 is not a typo, there was some story with why the numbers didn't match up) but I wouldn't buy that. If an English version of Secret of Mana 3 could be found I definitely would.

I knew the Japanese title... but could secret of Mana 3 be under another gaming title?

and hey... I am in no way looking down on anyone for using roms..etc...
Besides this topic... of course we do not discuss them in the other topics.....

If thats what you all do.... that so be it.

I am just saying... I love having the originals on hand... and I don't want to own them because I like originals... and buying originals helps keep people (like me) in business :lol

Your confused..let me clear this whole srcet of mana thing up for you guys.

The first one released was Seiken Densetsu (1991 Gameboy)
then Seiken Densetsu 2 aka Secret of Mana in the US (1993 SNES)
then Seiken Densetsu 3 (1995 SNES)
then Seiken Densetsu 4 aka Legend of Mana in the US (2000 PSone)
then Shinyaku Seiken Densetsu aka Sword of Mana in the US (2003 GBA)

So...in short there was only one Secret of Mana released on SNES here in the US and it was Seiken Densetsu 2 JPN title.
The only way you can play this game (Seiken Densetsu 3) in english is by playing the rom, which is actually a fan translation also known as a "hack".

So don't waste your time looking for a Secret of Mana 3 US...it never existed.
