if you blinked, you probably missed it.

Yesterday we took reservations for the PS3. Nationwide. It was over in like 10 minutes. LOL We only found out about it Monday night. It was like, "Oh hey, btw you're taking reservations for the PS3 tomorrow." O_O The allocations varied by store, but the max was 16 systems. People actually started lining up Monday night. By the time the store opened at 10 yesterday there were already 16 people in line, and all we did was hand them numbers and then get their reserves made. It only took like 10-15 minutes to do that, but we still got calls all day: "Are you taking reservations on the PS3?" and I was like, "We're sold out already." It was fun.

I haven't seen any posts, so I was just wondering if anyone other than people who receive email from us even knew about it.

I don't know about the Wii yet, but I would assume that we'll start taking reservations soon. But those will have better allocation numbers, since more systems will be available. I think we're supposed to get at least 36 Wiis for launch (compared to 16 for PS3).

Yeah, I heard all about it. 10 per store they say for the PS3? I wonder how many for the Wii

The Wii allocation for launch is better. Max per store is 36, as I mentioned above. That alone pretty much guarantees that it will outsell the PS3.

And then you also have to consider that because the Wii is probably easier to product (no blu-ray or cell technology needed) that even if the launch systems sell out fast, they will probably be able to restock much faster than the PS3.

BTW, in case you missed it in the Wii section, GameStop and EB are taking reservations on the Wii on Friday (the 13th).

If the cell processor is as special as Sony would have us believe, it will definitely tax the production numbers. They system on the whole is rather specialized and does not use common "off the shelf" parts. In the past with systems like Super Nintendo and Genesis, the processors were not specialized and were not even produced for the console. It is interesting that current gen systems have such custom CPUs. Just goes to show how competitive the market is now.

There is one downside to custom chips that maybe most people don't think about. The cell processor has never been tested in non PS3 hardware, so any bugs in the design may be undiscovered. Usually this is not a huge issue, because they can be worked around through code. Also, don't expect to see a PS3 emulator ever get completed. It would be almost unthinkable ;-) (maybe 10 years from now)

The Wii is much more traditional in design and more programmer friendly as well. Plain old PPC is well known and has those nifty general use registers ;-)
