Issues with NHL 2K5 on Xbox

Has anybody else had any issues with their copy of NHL 2K5. I was playing a franchise, got about a dozen games done then tried to load up the next game when it froze and the music kinda skipped and kept repeating. I tried to sim that particular game and it did the same thing. So I gave that up and tried to do a season...it eventually did the same thing. :-\
I was telling Dr. Ackula about my problem...he thinks it could be my DVD drive (it's a Phillips). Does anybody else have any ideas before I think about yanking the DVD drive out to put a good one in? Thanks...

I'm not really that well versed in newer consoles..I'm more of a retro guy..but I have seen many similar issues with many Xbox games on many different Xbox consoles. I know one guy whose Xbox will always freeze if he tries to use any custom soundtracks on any game...and I have seen multiple instances of games freezing, skipping, and locking up.

Some of the games that spring to mind are Morrowind, KOTOR, CvS Chaos, DOA volleyball..and others.

I am not sure if its the DVD drives that cause these problems or not..hopefully someone else here knows more about it than I. But I have heard that certain DVD drives have issues like this, as well as disc read errors which I have seen alot of on my first Xbox console.

These are the sort of things that make me not care for Xbox..I have never experienced issues like this with any other console..its alot like PC games and their bugs...but then agian Xbox is basically just a small PC.
 
I haven't had a problem with NHL 2005 freezing. I have a green Xbox with a Phillips. Only thing I had a problem with was my 2.4 GHz wireless controller lagging.
 
thats what you get for buying an Xbox :lol :p

actually.. that sounds like a dvd reader problem (like dr.ackula stated).
Does anyone know if the track loads into memory... or the game loads into memory while the track is played from the DVD?


try getting it serviced?

Before servicing it, get a DVD lens cleaner. I saw a nice one at GameCrazy near my house that also had some audio tracks to test out new surround sound systems :D

I just need to fork out the $10 for it...

what about my question though?  How does the track load?  Is it played off disc while the game is loaded into memory?
or Vice Verca?

And Jeepin.. didn't you say you had more than 1 game that did this?  Maybe I was mistaken.

I'm not really sure how I'd be able to tell what it's doing when it's loading up, Blue :-\
I'm also not sure if I had another one that did that or not...I don't specifically remember one on my XBox doing that. The other other problem I can specifically recall was with one of the Madden games on my 'Cube. If I had another problem with an XBox game...I must not have played it in a long time.

I don't know the technical specifics...but some games and DVDs are just harder to read by certain drives...I'm not sure what makes them harder to read..but its true. I own 600+ DVDs and I can tell you that at least 25% of them will not play on an Xbox and about 10% will not play at all on a PS2...yet every one I own will play on my Apex player..so my point is that DVDs are touchy..some use different encoding methods than others...some have more layers...some companies use different quality levels of media...the same thing applies to DVD-ROM's ..which is what Xbox games are. The way companies encode data onto DVD media is constantly changing..and some drives will have a harder time reading newer types of media...this is just the way it is sadly.

Newer games will always be more likely to have such issues, as the chances that the media or encoding methods could have recently changed a bit are greater with newer media.

On the same note...I have a RCA DVD player...a Sony DVD player...and an Apex DVD player....the only one that will play every DVD I own is the much cheaper Apex...
 
I'd try that.. see if you have a faulty disk.

if that does not work either...  then the game is just messed up... or your Xbox doesn't like the game :)

but make sure you get a scratchless disc.

Finally got around to renting it...the rented one doesn't work either :-\

So...do I really think about opening up my Xbox (which runs my other games fine) and risk screwing it up worst...or do I do something else? *sigh* maybe I'll look for a different cheap NHL game...

Thats what I figured....its almost GOT to be your DVD drive then. Welcome to the club, I have owned 3 Xboxs, all of them ended up being pieces of crap.

Wonderful Microsoft..its amazing how stable and reliable ALL their products are isn't it? (Obvious sarcasm)
