It's just not fair

I know this problem is far from rare, but it still really grinds my gears. At my place of employment I only got 1 day off for Christmas holidays, and that was Christmas day. I didn't get any other days off through the whole month, so I took it upon myself to go home for New Year's to celebrate it with my friends and just call in to work on Monday and say my ride's car broke down or whatever. But of course on the first day of 2007 the bus schedule changes so my excuse goes out the window and I gotta be back for work in a couple hours.

The only reason I was gonna duck out of work on Monday is because my folks were gonna be going to the city on Tuesday anyway and they were gonna give me a ride. I figured hey, why not take a day off, have a long weekend, and pay nothing for a trip home on the holidays. Now, because I have to take the bus it's gonna cost me $20 just to get there, and the city buses aren't running so I'm prolly gonna have to take a taxi home which will most likely be another $20, so when all is said and done I more or less break even by working today. I break even, I have to go back a day earlier than I was planning, and I'll still take flak for being late. Plus I hate my job, so having to work really dampens my spirits... neigh, drenches them.

I know they say when life throws you a lemon you should make lemonade, but I've been making lemonade all month long and I was really looking forward to actually drinking some of it.

Dude, calling out to work on new years day is something they already expect because I can guarantee you that you weren't the only one who was thinking it. Everybody wants that day off. I can guarantee you they would not have accepted that your car broke down also. Unless your folks made a surprise visit you should have planned ahead a little more. Im assuming you work in retail? Or some kind of customer service?

That sucks man. Having to work any holidy can be a downer, and especially if it's a major/popular one. As for your job, is there some sort of tie that you have to it? I guess I feel that if you don't enjoy it, then it ain't worth doing.

Well, on the positive side.......I got to go shopping today just because people like you sacrifice their time to work on New Years Day.......so, thanks, I guess! It would suck to have to work, though.

That stinks, Stealth Toilet. I feel bad for ya. You need a little more time off to relax and de-stress and stuff.

I had to work last new year's eve in a psych ward... rang in the new year with certified nutcases...

I had to work christmas eve through christmas morning..

Oh yeah, nearly cancelled thanksgiving dinner last year, 'til I got called as I was leaving for work to be told they were overstaffed...

Get over it. If you don't like working the holidays, find a 9-5 day job that has holidays off. I can't count the holidays I've worked. If you don't like it, change it. It's up to you how much you really do work. My last job sucked, so I quit instead of staying there and complaining about it more. (Now I just say I'm glad I left.)

Easier said than done. It's hard to find an entry level job that is straight 9-5 with holidays off. I know all about sucking it up and doing it anyways, I know all about changing the situation I've got stuck in, the problem is that at the end of the day I've got bills to pay, so my ideal working environment takes a backseat to survival.

My post was not made with the sole purpose of lamenting my misfortune, it was mostly just to express the straw that broke the camel's back. I would love to quit my job and find something else, something that might not be a dream job but still more bearable than this one. The problem is that this job gives me benefits, and I got 4 wisdom teeth who are desperately trying to escape my jaw. I don't have $1000 lieing around to pay for this, so I am sucking it up, day after day, due to my circumstance. Is it really so much to ask for more than one day off for Christmas?

Wisdom teeth are a bummer. I had all four taken out at the same time. My teeth are big, so the wisdom teeth were really large...
