Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata says the company could beat its most optimistic forecasts for the year, following strong sales of Wii and DS. Meanwhile, stats have been released on the top selling Wii games in Japan, with Wii Sports beating Zelda.

In an interview with Reuters, Iwata said, “We came up with the current earnings forecasts before we sold even a single unit of the Wii and when we were not so sure about the cannibalization effect between the Wii and the DS. Confidence could be too strong a word, but there is an emerging possibility [for better results]."

Current forecasts from Nintendo are for a profits increase of 60 percent with sales up 45 percent.

Iwata said some analysts had predicted that Wii and DS – both of which are aimed at the ‘expanded’ games market - might take sales from one another. Iwata said this has not been the case.

“Some analysts say the largest rival of the Wii is the DS. But if you take a look at DS sales in the United States in the Thanksgiving week, or DS sales in Japan in the week of the Wii launch, there has been little impact," he said.

Meanwhile, stats for the Wii's Japanese launch have been revealed. The firm sold 370,000 units over the launch weekend, with Wii Sports - unbundled in Japan - the b iggest selling game hitting around 50% of hardware purchasers. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess sold 140,000 copies. Most other games sold lower numbers.

How bout them apples? Hmm..

Interesting...is that because every Wii comes with Wii sports?

Well, to understand this topic requires understanding of the fundamental differences in our cultures. In Japan, Wii Sports was NOT bundles with the Wii, as Nintendo knew the Japanese would devour it with much fervor (as seen here). Furthermore, Zelda is not as popular in Japan as it is the United States, so it's not that far fetched for something like that to have higher sales.

Wii Sports managed a 1/2 tie in ratio, which is fairly good. If you combine that with the amount of copies Wii Play sold, this is essentially a 1:1 ratio of Wii "mini-game-title" to console. This is just on top of other titles such as Zeruda selling at a high rate (~150k if I recall correctly for the first two days).

Whereas in the good ol' USA, Nintendo would have a much harder time selling Wii Sports as a stand alone title. But when combining it with the Wii as a conjoined purchase, success is achieved, as many people who would previously down a title like Wii Sports are automatically introduced to it and find that they actually like and ENJOY it. Problem solved and easily done via different tactics for different cultures.

This is saying that they are predicting a 60% increase in sales HIGHER than what they "expected" Not just a 60% increase from last month or what have you

Exactly. This is the important part. This is a potential 60% increase in profit DESPITE their forecast of what it would have been with the Wii already configured in to their forecast.

Ahhh...I didn't catch that. That is good news.
