Lunar For DS
Marvelous Interactive's DS game makes us look twice.
By Anoop Gantayat
January 4, 2005 - If you were tuning in to IGNDS a few months prior to the DS's release, you may have come upon a game titled "Luna." First announced by Marvelous Interactive in early October as part of a big lineup of new DS games, the full identity of this title was a mystery.

The game's proper English spelling was also apparently somewhat of a mystery, as we got it wrong. We translated the name as "Luna," which is a reasonable way to translate the two Japanese alphabetic characters "Ru" and "Na" that form it. Another way is "Lunar," and an update to the Marvelous Interactive website today reveals that "Lunar" is indeed the correct English spelling (unless the people who produce the Marvelous website screwed up).
Lunar is actually just a tentative name for what appears to be an early game. Pricing and release information have yet to be revealed for the title. Nor has Marvelous provided any details on what we can expect from the game.

This isn't the first time the name "Lunar" has been used for a game. Japanese RPG developer Gamearts used the name most famously in a couple of memorable Sega CD RPGs that were later brought to the Saturn and PlayStation. Gamearts has announced that it is working on a new RPG for the DS, but it's unclear if the Lunar that has been announced by Marvelous is that game (for the record, we're guessing no).

With Lunar, the DS is getting some mighty marvelous support from Marvelous Interactive. In addition to Lunar, Marvelous is also working on Harvest Moon, Urusei Yatsura, Kawa no Nushi Tsuri and an original RPG for the system.

This would definitely be a superb addition to the DS lineup of up and coming RPGS :buttrock: :buttrock:

Ubisoft has officially confirmed that the legendary Lunar RPG franchise is headed to the DS. The original Lunar design team is reuniting to create the game, titled Lunar: Genesis, which will be a prequel to Lunar: Silver Star Story.

GameStop has Lunar: Genesis listed for release on July 27.

Re: the new Lunar game

Pimp, I'm sure it'll be great.

Between these versions of Lunar 1, nobody has the story right by now, but the purpose remains.

Sega Master System/ Sega Mark III version (Japan only)
Sega CD
Sega Saturn (Japan only)
PS1
GBA version

Each one keeps alternating the story line. On who is the hero of the game, yet no matter how many times they did that, it never really effected the main purpose of the game. Which I felt is pretty unique.

Just found out this will take place 1000 years before "Lunar Silver Star". Yet leads up to the events to the first game

I'm thinking it's going to be pushed back, since I didn't see it at E3, though. Well, at least not at Nintendo's booth. It may have been playable at the Ubisoft booth.

Anyway, I am SO excited for this game. I just beat Lunar Silver Star Story Complete (PSone) and now I'm playing through Lunar 2: Eternal Blue in preparation. :D

quick update and with offical release details from the-magicbox.com

the game will be released by Ubisoft under the name Lunar: Dragon Song sometime in July in the USA.

The Japanese version will remain a release in August with the name "Lunar Genesis"

I think Dragon Song is the name I voted for. That's cool.

I'm glad to see that it's coming out as released. And it's really nice of them to release it in the US before Japan. :D

Lunar Genesis will play as a new 2D RPG rather than a port of the previous two installments released on the Sega CD in 1992 and 1994. The game takes place 1,000 years before Lunar Silver Star, with a new adventure following Gien Campbell, a 15-year-old delivery boy that works in a port town. Party members in the game include Lucia Collins, a 14-year-old, magic-using girl that's who is like a sister to Gien, and Gabiriel Ryan, a half-beast girl that's good at claw-fighting and has the ability to absorb and use enemy attacks.

Gien's story starts off when he one day receives a request to make a delivery to the town of Heelritz, a place also known as the town of half-beasts. Excited about his visit to the legendary city, Gien makes his way there despite of a lot of hardships. However, what he sees when he gets to Heelritz is far from the utopia that he had imagined.

Lunar Genesis takes advantage of the DS's hardware, letting players move around the map by just touching to the point where you want to go. The battle uses both the top and the bottom screens to show the enemies on the ground and in the air. One interesting feature is that players can order their characters to run away from battles with the DS's microphone. Whether the player can also order other battle commands via voice is currently unknown.

Development of Lunar Genesis is currently 90 percent complete.

Man, this game just sounds even better every time I read something about it! I'm totally psyched!

One thing though...one of the main characters in Lunar 2 is also named Lucia...is that just a coincidence?

Probably or she plays a major role in why Lucia was named after her?

Well in Lunar 2, Lucia is basically to the Blue Star what Althena is to Lunar. She's a goddess, if you will. So if Lunar Dragon Song is a prequel to the very first Lunar, it might actually go into the part where Althena has to destroy the Blue Star in order to defeat Zophar.

It could just be a coincidence though. :)

There's some bad news though; according to the GameStop computers, Lunar Dragon Song is coming out in September now instead of July.

I think it's just a coincidence that the names are identical. None of the characters in the new character art look even remotely like Lunar 2's Lucia.

I still can't wait for this game! Woot!
