Maximo: Ghosts to Glory

Anyone checked out this game for the PS2? I thought it looked like it was related to the Ghosts & Goblins or Ghouls & Ghosts games from back in the day. It turns out that I was right. It's a newer offshoot from those games. IGN gave it a 9.2 while Gamespot gave it a 7.8. Ironically, the guy at the department store said, "Can't go wrong with Maximo.. it's all slashing and hacking." And it was a department store, not a video game store that was trying to pressure me into buying.

I played for a bit and am liking it. It seems to have a bit of the old Super Ghouls & Ghosts type of play that I remember from the SNES, except that it's three dimensional. The controls are good and camera angle keeps up...very rarely even needing the "move the camera" command from the L1 button.

It does not seem easy so far though. I do wish I could save progress more often than the game allows...The "Holy Ground" check points are pretty decently spaced, but those only allow you to restart when you die. If you actually turn off the console, you lose that progress. From the instructions, I gather that you can only do an actual "save" on your character after defeating one of the four major bosses and taking the option to save instead of getting a "sorceress kiss", which apparently leads to a better ending.

Overall, I think that I did pretty well in picking the game up out of the local bargain bin!

Yes, I surely do. I used to have the 4 foot standee of the first Maximo when the game was new. It's sad to say that the company who designed this game, had to shut their doors forever, since Capcom was shrinking down it's staff. Which happened sometime last year.

I strongly agree, this game's challenge is very fierce. It's really hard on you, when you finish the levels, via it's score meter. I'll usually search all over the level before I even quit, but it still will say 67% complete..

The graphics are astounding and most of my friends compare it to that of a Saturday Morning Halloween Cartoon special.

It takes a good while to reach the first save spot, but you are forced to spend 100 gold to save :(

I do recommend it's sequel "Maximo Vs. the Army of Zin" simply because it's a bit easier and more fun this time around and saving is much easier to do now. Only downside, is you spend more gold trying to learn new attacks to help you later on. (especially since the spin attack has to be purchased now, unlike the first game)
