Meeting people online - stories?

I saw a couple contests on this site: http://www.hivepals.com/ where you share funny horror stories about meeting people offline that you met online. I have a few good ones to share – like the time I went to meet a guy – just as a friend cuz I was new in the area - and he turned out to be a cult leader auditioning followers. He took me to the Hare Krishna temple for charity food. He kept looking at me funny and when I asked him why he was looking down so much he said he was trying to see if I had good birthing hips because he needed to repopulate the world. Maybe at least I can win something for my trouble...

I've never met someone online, then met them offline before... Only the other way around. However, I guess oe could say having Vid chat with someone you've only ever had normal chgat with for the first time can count... No matter how much you may picture your internet buddies in your head, you'll never really know how they look or how they sound until one does a Video chat (or in your case Oliphant, meet them in person).

BTW: Did you bail out as quickly as you could, or play along with it?

Yep, I've met a few chicks in person that I met over the net. One was cool for a while, and then after we met she got all crazy/stalker/clingy and the other one straight up lied to me about her picture. She looked pretty good in her picture, but when she showed up she looked nothing like it. The picture must have been 5 years old or something lol. And, I am gonna meet somebody I met from this site in the fall. But I know she is cool, so no worries there

Somewhere in between. I'm too polite... I sat through the rest of the meeting quietly while he talked, then politely shook his hand and left. What's worst is that I was trying to find people to play squash with and the dude was supposed to meet me at the courts, but then called to change at the last minute. While we talked it came out that he didn't play squash at all... totally misleading. I *am* going to enter that HivePals contest - I think that story has a shot at winning. The prize is a $15 iTunes certificate. They have a viral video for their site where a lady is looking for new female friends in town and it ends up being a guy who talks to his sock puppets. It's a scary world out there, I guess.

Of course, I've also had friends I met offline - in the real world, that later turned out to be crazy. One of my friends was a compulsive liar and made up her whole life. She pretended to be a teacher and one day she disappeared. Her family and boyfriend and friends (including me) mounted a search party, and we unraveled all her lies (like, we called the school everyone thought she worked at, and they were like "No, we've never had a teacher by that name, we don't even teach that subject here.")... she showed up three days later locked in the trunk of her own car (alive, but dehydrated). I had thought she was a sane, sweet, teacher....

One of my best friends in the world is a girl I met online. We both lost our jobs at the same time, and spent long hours at night playing card games and in a chat room. But I've also met some real losers too. My ex boyfriend was someone I met online who happened to live just a mile away from me. Oh if only I'd deleted those emails before reading them, I'd have saved myself a lot of trouble lol!

I think the only people I have met in person who I initially met online are BV and Grindspine. Who are both cool people
