MR.KAZ "The Anti-Christ"?

MR.KAZ

Lurker
I couldn't believe my frickin' ears!

I was at the chess club yesterday playing some games of blitz with the other members when this elderly woman came in with a kid who looked like he was around 11 or so.He was just lookin' to play a few casual games,so I obliged.I won the first game in about 12 or 13 moves. On our second game,he hung his queen then was checkmated a few moves later.

After that game,he has a huge fit,and tosses the board and pieces at the wall! His face was as red as a cherry with the tears soon to follow. How am I supposed to react to this? One part of me wanted to laugh my ass off,the other part wanted to go over and calm the kid down.

I walk over to shake the kid's hand and tell him that he played well despite the losses. This elderly woman looked at me like she wanted to kill me! She said..."You couldn't go a little easier on a young child?.."

I replied.."No ma'am,I don't take it easy on anyone I play...".It's my personal belief that if you don't play your very best it's an insult to yourself and your opponent. The woman looks at me and says..."I know what you are,you are the "Anti-Christ"!! Can you frickin' believe that?

So they got up and left, leaving me to pick up the pieces, along with the incessant razzing from the others. That kid needs to toughen up if expects to get better. My chess instructor the late Joe Harris always told me..."When you are just starting out in chess you will lose a thousand games before you win a hundred. He was absolutely correct.

But accusing me of being the "Anti-Christ"?!C'mon.

Godspeed.
Kaz

Sounds like the old woman's just bitter, and yes, the kid should toughen up. One can't expect to get better if the challenge isn't worthy of the effort. Better to learn from a master, than from the apprentice... most the time at least.

The kid should toughen up and that is one crazy lady calling you the Anti-Christ because you beat her grand son fair and square -facepalm-.

No MR.KAZ, we all know who the Anti-Christ really is. Well, us Heavy Rain players know. It's....

Lt. Carter Blake. Just watch the Nathaniel scene. You'll know what I mean. :P

XD i had to laugh at that.

but seriously the kid is already 11 years old... he should know how to take a loss. when i was 8 my grandpa taught me how to play chess and he always played at full force because he knew the more mistakes i made the more i would learn

Exactly. You don't learn a whole helluva lot by crushing your opponent.Maybe a little, but you learn more by losing in most games.

Kaz I hope you responded the way everyone should in that situation

Hmm, seems like you did everything possible to make it right. I wouldn't worry about it, sounds like the kid was just a little spoiled brat and this was probably a good lesson for him.

What you should have done, was before he could have had a temper tantrum. You should have thrown the chess board at him and started yelling "YOU COULDN'T PLAY A LITTLE BETTER?!".

Yeah, and with my luck, that lady would turn out to be some kung fu grandmaster and lay the boots to me!

Kaz your not pullinga Kramer on us and getting your jollies whooping up on kids in some childern chess program. :D Anyone else remember that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer signed up for a kids karate class and beat the snot out of them I'm sorry Kaz this just reminded me of that episode a little.

Okay serousily the kid is 11 that's plenty old enough for him to start losing at games even if he was say 5 and you weren't letting win at cards the anti-christ comment would be out of line and way over the top. Heck when I was 8 years old not only was my step grandmother not letting me win at boards game she kept trying to cheat.

There are kids who are as little as 13 who are million times stronger of a player then me! :lol
In competitive chess there is what's known as a "Chess Rating System".This number represents the chess playing strength for tournament purposes.

Me(1649) 13-14 Yo In Canada(1734+)
1000 is the lowest rating---------------------*---------------*---------------------------------2819 is roughly the highest rating ever recorded in professional chess,I believe was set by GM Gary Kasparov

My current rating is 1649.There are countless numbers of children at the rough age of say 13-14 in Canada that can chew me up and spit me out.

I see so that's why you were picking on 11 year old the 13 year olds put up to much of a fight, yeah Kaz your a real big man.:lol

And yes Kaz I do know that with chess it's more about out thinking your opptent, experience and knowledge although I imagine being older is helpful to a certain degree as far as learning and understanding so of the more advanced strategies.

Young kids have minds that are like a sponge. They remember things better than most adults, they are usually in better shape than most adults. They get exercise, they have a healthy sleep schedule due to getting up for school and parents usually have them to bed by a decent hour.I obviously can't say for sure with any degree of certainty, but for the most part, they don't drink or smoke.Quite often the exercise they receive in gym class keeps them active and healthy.I've seen a lot of young players who are amazingly disciplined when it comes to chess. Before a game, they chow down on fruit which is a good energy source that lasts longer than a Twix bar. They don't suck down the coffee amount that some adults do because it interferes with their focus if they have too much.Plus, most parents won't allow them to drink it.

Children are quite aware of the concepts and theory of the game as well any adults, they just process the info in a different way,and execute these things just as well throughout a game. There is one thing that can kill a young teen male's chess though, and that is a girlfriend! Just see how quick chess is put on the back burner after hooking up with a girl.

Children can be extremely frustrating to adults who play them.Especially to adults who hate kids.I'll be honest, kids really stick in my craw over a chess board because of their age they can be extremely arrogant, laugh at you if you drop a piece to them etc. Can't do crap about that Jack! It's just their age. Some adults won't even enter tournaments if children are participating.

With respect to your remark. The "Great Kaz" holds no quarter to anyone! :lol
