MS issues XBOX safety alert (recall)

February 17, 2005 - Microsoft will voluntarily replace the power cords on 14.1 million Xbox units out of concern for a possible fire hazard, the company announced today.

While Microsoft emphasizes that the chance of failure is low -- the company says fewer than 10,000 Xbox units experienced the problem -- the small chance of more than minimal property damage is prompting the recall.

In 30 instances, Microsoft reports that the failure caused minor injuries or minor property damage. The issue occurs inside the console or where the power cable meets the back of the console.

Apart from those sold in Continental Europe, Xboxes built before October 23, 2003 need a replacement power cord, while in Continental Europe, the issue affects units built before January 13, 2004.

"This is a preventative step we're choosing to take despite the rarity of these incidents," said Microsoft's Robbie Bach. "We regret the inconvenience, but believe offering consumers a free replacement is the responsible thing to do."

Gamers with affected Xbox units can click over to xbox.com and look for the Power Cord Replacement link. Microsoft recommends turning off your Xbox when it's not in use, until the power cord has been replaced.

I think my XBOX was built in 2004, but if any of you guys have the affected XBOX, pick up a new power cord. :)

here's a link to Xbox themselves to order a new cord for free

your Xbox had to be made before 2003..but you can check with Mircosoft's help center to determine if it qualifies.

I can't believe this was on every single news channel this evening lol

Has a recall ever happened before for a video game console? this is the first time ive heard of such a thing

honestly..... not that I can recall :lol

This is so typical of Microsoft. I'm not in the least bit suprised by this news. The Xbox is a very faulty machine to begin with, and I have experienced many problems first hand.

:lol That is kind of funny actually. At least Microsoft is taking the blame, and offering free replacement cords, instead of trying to point the finger and blame someone else. Still, you think they would have caught this beforehand.

mine took a good month to ship to me... lol, i like the new cord, it's so big and... powerful-looking. PLUS it comes with an awesome warning sticker!

My bro's used Xbox needed one. Took like 3 days to ship.

Now it just makes me wonder how the cord he used to have (that looks exactly like the one I still use in my newer Xbox) is any different...?
