My Oblivion review

i'm not sure where to start when reviewing oblivion, its just so big, so immense, and so immersive.

lets start with the basic gameplay. its an action rpg, but not a usual one. you can do quests, kill monsters, level up, or just explore. the real meat of the game is in its exploration. you always will find something interesting to check out, be it ruins, a village, castle, fort or just a wooded area. the game features a world over 16 square miles big, so you will always have something to do. the game has a special tool called "realtree" that it uses to create lifelike forests, it was created by bethesda, who researched how trees and plants grow. the combat can be a bit clunky at times, but overall its very fun.

now lets tackle the length of oblivion. its can be 15 hours long, it can be 150 hours long, whatever you want. there are literally dozens of quests in the game for you to do, and skills for you to upgrade. you can literally play for hundreds of hours without even TOUCHING the main quest. its that big.

the story is a bit simple, but its good. an emporor has been assassinated, and its up to you to find his heir to the throne.

there are several guilds for you to join, including the arena, dark brotherhood, blades, mages guild, theives guild and fighters guild. they all have a variety of quests and individual storylines for you to follow and rank up through, each rank being an acheivement for your Xbox Live Gamertag.

all in all, oblivion is one BIG game to take under your hood. sometimes it can be overwhelming. if your a gamer that can sit down for hundreds of hours, and play this masterpeice, then go for it. if your a casual gamer, stay away

final verdict

Oblivon is on of the biggest games ever made, and will destroy your social life. it is personally one of my favorite games of all time, and is a marvel of modern gaming.

i give it a perfect 10 out of 10, and my highest reccomendation.

discuss.

*thumbs down* No offense, but I disagree with you on a few points there. The story was absolutely awful in my opinion.

Also, you forgot to mention the fact that once you've visited one fort, or one cave, or one Ayleid ruin, there isn't much use in visiting the others because they are all pretty much the same.

I found the combat a little bit too simplistic and easy too. Once you have a high enough sneak skill, you just sneak up on any enemy, and hit them. If high enough, you'll probably stay hidden from your enemies and can just keep hitting them with sneak attacks till they die (which almost never took more than 3 hits for me). Even without stealth, it isn't that much of a challenge. I hit that "super powerful" Necromancer you fight at the end of the mages guild 3 times and he died (I was using an enchanted weapon but still...).

Those criticisms aside, it is a big game with a lot to do. I wouldn't give it a 10 though. 8 or 8.5 maybe because it really is a lot of fun.

The story was generic but it's still a fun game. I've already finished the main quest, fighter's guild, mage's guild, and the arena. I need to do the assassin's guild and the thieve's guild still. And I haven't finished the Shivering Isles, either.

i thought the review was good and pretty useful.
i had oblivion for about a week but unfortunately didnt put too much time into it.

Nice review! I got a question for you all who have played through Oblivion. My question is, what do you guys think of "level scaling"? I ask this because on the actual Oblivion forum a lot of people have complained about the level scaling, but over here I never heard anybody complain about it. So maybe they're just Morrowind fan boys who can't accept change, hmmmm.....

i'm not sure what you mean by level scaling? :?

Ok, well basically it means that items and enemies level up with you. So, when you get stronger/higher level, enemies will get stronger too, and items will be of more value. In Morrowind it's not like that, a weak criminal will always be a weak criminal, no matter what level you're at. See what I mean now?

I don't mind the level scaling. As fast as I leveled it would get boring if enemies weren't a challenge.

But honestly the scaling doesn't seem to always work. When I did the final part of the Mages Guild quest, the boss was ridiculously easy to beat. It might just be because he's a mage and mages have horrible defense anyway, but even so it only took three hits.

Hey, same with me. I actually said that in a previous post:

Plus, once you get you get into the Arcane University and make yourself some enchanted weapons, the game just gets so easy. With that, and a high stealth skill, you can basically crush anything the game can throw at you.

Yeah I used to go out of my way to avoid Will-o-wisps. Then I got a daedric weapon and discovered I could kill them in about four hits. I really don't fear anything now. I doubt there's anything left that could actually kill me.

I think for the next Elder Scrolls they should add co-op or something.

easily solved, do the mages guild last

ADDITION TO THE REVIEW:

as i forgot to mention before, the game has its share of glitches. there are certain scenarios that render NPC's invisible, or silent (not able to talk to you) and there are random bugs that make certain quests not possible to finish. there will be invisible enemies and NPC's, (which are not supposed to be invisible) at times, but its not often. also, the game will crash, theres no avoiding it. the xbox 360 and playstaion 3 versions will give you disc read errors, and the pc version will crash to desktop. these are not problems with your consoles, its just an error with the game, so dont worry about it. personally, i ran into some game breaking glitches that rendered the main questline, and several other quests not possible to finish, so i was forced to start over my 70+ hour file. given the scope of this title, i am not mad at the developers for these glitches. this game is so huge, there are sure to be mistakes. these glitches should not be big enough to hider your play experience, and it is still a breathtaking, gorgeous game. as i said before, a perfect 10 out of 10, and a must play.
