Nintendo Holding Sony Back in November

December 9, 2005 - The NPD numbers are trickling in, and though we don't have the final spot on tally sales figures on hand, it's clear that Nintendo is still holding its own against the pure muscle that Sony's flexing with its PlayStation Portable.

November was expected to be Sony's biggest month yet with the release of Grand Theft Auto for the PSP, but even with those huge guns, if the numbers are correct both the Nintendo DS and the Game Boy Advance managed to outsell the Sony portable individually.

Though NPD has gone on the record stating that these currently posted numbers are inaccurate and will be updated in the near future, if these numbers are even close to the final tally, no system slouched in sales. Sony managed to sell more than 360,000 systems in the span of November. But the Nintendo DS, using the brutality of Mario Kart DS and other key titles already on the shelves, got more than 380,000 systems in gamers' hands. Of course, the Game Boy Advance, with its newly released Micro design as well as the brand new, brighter SP system, beat both systems combined: Nintendo sold through approximately 900,000 GBA systems in November.

And according to corporate emails, the DS outsold the PSP on the day after Thanksgiving, aka Black Friday. :D

hhoooooollllyyy CRAP! 900,000 GBA systems?! ::D :huh

say what?! That is just insanity.

The DS wasn't that far ahead of the psp 360k versus 380k.. thats nothing to brag about... but 900,000 gba systems is INSANITY....
Nintendo is making some major bank there :lol

using the brutality of Mario Kart DS

I dont know why but that part made me smile. :D

And although the DS is ahead at this point, if Sony gets their act together and releases killer games that are on par or greater than Mario Kart DS then I can actually see the PSP taking the handheld crown. That's pretty much all that is missing from the PSP, because watching movies on the PSP is awsome already. In the next generation of PSP's I think they should take out the music playing abilities and sell it at a cheaper price. It's not that great as an MP3 player.

I don't think losing the mp3 player capabilities is going to bring it down more than $5 :lol

I still think the DS will win out over the PSP.... not just because I am a Nintendo fan... I own both systems.... and the PSP just doesn't offer good games, BUT even their goal of being a ps2 but in a handheld situation is sort of killing it. They need unique games... GTA is Sony's trump card (IMO) and if they cannot beat out the DS with that, then I don't know what its going to take for them to pull ahead.

Well, they need to get rid of it and add something else because Im sure people would rather buy an MP3 player that does it better. They need to do something to lower the price. That and the lack of quality games is what's hurting the PSP. Oh well, I own both and love both of them. :)

Nintendo will forever have the stronghold on the portable market, simply due to cost/price. efficient, and quantity is Nintendo's upper advantage

You know Neph's gonna be all over you for making this topic...

What would be the point? It's a fact that is backed up by numbers and taken from a reliable source. There's really nothing that anyone could argue. I mean, what would someone come and say, "NPD numbers are faked!"

The only thing that could be argued would be that the PSP didn't sell as well because it's still too high-priced, at which I would have to agree. If the PSP was cheaper, if its games were cheaper, and if the memory cards were cheaper, I'm sure that the PSP probably would have outsold the DS.

Yeah, thats all. How long would it take for Sony to lower its prices all around? Maybe I'm just too used to Nintendo having handhelds, but I really am having trouble with the PSP. Maybe its the price too.

The only feature I have a problem with is the idea of playing movies. I mean, you can buy a PSP fo rhow much? Then buy the movie for $50 (I may be wrong, I haven't really checked) and then watch the movie. Of course, its that tiny little screen and only works fo the PSP. Or, you could get a prtable DVD player. Sure, its a little bulky and probably doesn't have as long of a battery life as we would like, but it has a bigger screen and the DVDs can be played at home as well.

Then again, I am not a big fan of handhelds, period. Don't ask why, I just couldn't get into them very much.
