Not much longer....

dumb question: Don't most DVD's sell for $15-$20ish...so why would you pay $20-$30 (potentially more in otherwords) for a movie you can only use on a PSP and therefore can only view on that itty bitty screen (when compared to a TV). :?

Prices of DVDs are very varied to be honest. From $9.99 to $36.99 is a typical range you will find in a store like Best Buy or Media Play. Depends on the movie, what company put it out, and whether or not its a special edition. I have gave $69.99 for 1 DVD before myself, but it was a region 2 Japanese DVD.

this is a good point. Most DVD's are $9.99 to $19.99. At least 85% are.. at least around here.
Special editions.... with the large boxs... and loads of features can be $26.00 - $36.99 (IE the Lord of the Rings movies).... and some boxsets can run $40-$100.
Walmart (I dispise walmart btw) sells some dvd's @ $5.99.... and they good titles in that price range. Best buy sells DVD's @ $9.99 on special...etc

I personally cannot understand how they will sell the movies at anything higher than $19.99... and the thing that sucks about it is that the UMD is only good for the PSP. So if you buy a movie for the PSP.... and you want to view it at home, you'll have to buy another dvd or something else.

Thats the only part I don't like.... it doesn't make too much sense.

Now, the GBA Video carts that were out... those make a little sense because they were normally episodes of cartoons that were not out on another format.... and you could only see on TV when that show was on. That makes sense, there is a benefit to something like that (even though I am not fond of the GBA video stuff). But when you have the same movie releasing on DVD thats on the PSP.. and you would have to buy 2 versions of the movie to view it in 2 different places... well.... we are getting redundant.

That's why you buy the DVD version and rip it to the PSP's memory stick :D

Exactly...this is what entices me about the PSP to be honest...I saw a thing on G4 where they showed how easy it was to take your DVDs and rip them and play them at really good quality on the PSP.

One word... DivX
:lol thats not a word :p

and .... while thats true... you would still have a problem fitting a whole movie onto the 32mb stick.
PLUS the psp viewer would have to be able to accept that format (codecs) and I doubt it does. MAybe I am wrong..... but I don't think that would be supported.

Well you don't have to use a 32 mb memory stick. It's compatible with the 512 ones as well. It's just that you'd have to buy those separately.

I compressed Saving Silverman to 280mb and it still looked pretty decent.
oh yeah? but will that Divx format be supported by the PSP?

@ mai.... how much are those though? I mean... its an additional $50-70 (or maybe more) that would have to be spent.

about the divx file format....A UMD disk is only 1.8 GB in capacity, so there must be some sort of compression involved. Im sure they probably used divx unless it is some sort of proprietary sony format....they would do that.

about buying the system....i think it is soooo cool, but i need to see it first. also i don't know if i would play it as often as i should for spending 250 bucks. its so sleek i think it will catch on and me really popular with the mainstream.

and ive read many places that you have to see it to believe it, a couple of reviews i read said that actually holding and playing it is a whole different experience than what was expected. maybe i am getting my expectations too high, thats why i want to play it before i buy.

so....has anyone actually played it yet?

Just got back from Gamestop's midnight opening. Looong line. Ill try to get a review in when I can.

Well, just my luck. I found at least two dead pixels. This sucks :hh Good thing I got the one year warranty.

I've played it... I owned the Japanese version for about 4-6 days before selling it off.

Its not a bad system... but I think its a little OVER hyped.
The screen is cool, but the system feels a bit flimsy. The Screen scratches VERY easily, so make sure to get a screen protector before you even tough the system. Seriously.

I hope there are not dead pixel problems... as I have hear from 1 guy so far that he had 1 dead pixel.. traded it back in for another PSP and then had 4 dead pixels.... he posted that on another MB.

I tried out a demo PSP today at the local Sam's Club. The part that impressed me the most was the screen. They had it playing Spiderman 2, and it looked great. The system itself only feels average though. It felt like if I held it too hard the thing would break, but since I didn't get to play any games, that might change later on. Overall its a nice system, but there aren't any games out there that make it a must buy, imo. Especially when some games are $50.

Sam's had atleast 20 of them packaged with Twisted Metal and some NBA game. The Wal Mart across the street had 15 sitting in the display case around noon. So far, atleast around here, it seems to be selling slowly, but that could easily change.

actually... its selling very slowly.

Most places you check have them in stock... and are not running out soon.
