Obama's In-Game Ads.

Electronic Arts has confirmed that presidential candidate Barack Obama's team have taken ads in its Xbox 360 racer Burnout Paradise.

An EA spokesperson told Gigaom, “I can confirm that the Obama campaign has paid for in-game advertising in Burnout. Like most television, radio and print outlets, we accept advertising from credible political candidates. Like political spots on the television networks, these ads do not reflect the political policies of EA or the opinions of its development teams.”

Obama's use of games is just one facet of a campaign that has been noted for its innovative use of media. No presidential candidate has used a game before.

Nevertheless, Obama has consistently used videogames as short-hand for parental negligence. Again this week, he told an audience in Ohio, "You know, I will invest in education. We'll make sure government gets behind the schools. But it won't make much of a difference if parents aren't turning off the television set and putting away the video games and making sure that our children are doing their homework.

I was wondering when this was going to happen.

Man, if I hear the words "change and hope" (or chope), I'm moving to another country.

Not saying I am voting for McCain, but every election year I get more and more irritated with political campaigns. Political candidates need to stay the heck out of videogames.

Hi Members!

I'm not from your country, nor am I an expert on politics. But with all due respect to Mr.Obama, don't you find his ad idea a touch tacky?

I'm opposed to in-game advertising of any sort, political or otherwise. It reminds me of that Futurama quote:

Fry sees an advertisement in his dream

Leela: Didn't you have ads in the 21st century?

Fry: Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games..and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts, and bananas and written on the sky. But not in dreams, no siree.

I'm sick of the political crap already. I quickly turn it somewhere else whenever I see it on TV. And I do not want to see it in a video game!

Amen! I swear to god if I hear one more of either side's stupid campaign slogans, I'm throwing my TV out. XD

So let me get this straight. First Obama says "Turn off the games and spend time with your kids" then does a 180 by PAYING these game companies to place his ads in those games. :( Like I can trust a man like this.

I would bet it was his campaign who did it without really asking Obama. He probably doesn't even know he's in a game.

Overall, I agree with what Strubes said though. Keep political ads out of games.

Yeah, I don't think it was his idea to put his ad in a video game. Campaigners pretty much do their own thing when promoting their candidate don't they?
