Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (Update: 9/8/10 Any DLC idea has been Canned)

Re: Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (March 9th, 2010 in the USA)

I'm not sure I'll be able to afford either this summer. FFXIII is definitely a draw toward getting one of the two though.

Re: Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (March 9th, 2010 in the USA)

Yeah I wasn't completely sure of your original question.

The 360 is still cheaper over all, but I would look at exclusives to each system and decide from there. A good many of the games that I really enjoy on the 360 are also available on either the PS3 or the PC, with the exception of Halo games. On the other hand, many of the PS3's noted games are only available on the PS3 (MGS4 and LBP come to mind).

I really wouldn't let FFXIII be the final deciding factor, either way. Personally I enjoy it but many people don't think it's true to the FF series.

Re: Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (March 9th, 2010 in the USA)

Yeah, there are many games available on both systems.

"True to the FF series" is pretty variable. I mean, none of the games (save Dirge of Cerebus following FFVII characters and FFX-2 following FFX characters) really have consistency of story, save all have chocobos and a guy named Cid.

Re: Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (March 9th, 2010 in the USA)

Well I'm going to be honest here, and say that I think hardcore FF fans have more of an issue with it than people newer to the series. It was, after all, made for a newer audience.

My first real foray into FF was FFX, and so I don't mind the changes to FFXIII.

It is a little linear and while the battle system is simplistic, I still find it quite enjoyable to use.

I also like all of the characters, which is pretty rare in an rpg. Vanille's voice acting is irritating but the character itself isn't.

I'm not a big RPG person, but I really loved FFVII. So just seeing XIII doesn't sit well with me. You just can't beat the Shinra and Jenovah music themes, in my opinion.

Also, Cactuars are in every game too, I believe.

Re: Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (March 9th, 2010 in the USA)

I agree on the music being weak in FFXIII. X was pretty good, though.

Re: Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (March 9th, 2010 in the USA)

My first Final Fantasy game was Final Fantasy II on the SNES (FFIV Famicom). So, I've definitely played it for a long time. However, I never got into the original Playstation part of the franchise. FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, and FF Tactics were just games I never got.

I would still say that my favorites from the series were FFIV Advance on the GBA and FFX on the PS2 though.

Re: Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (March 9th, 2010 in the USA)

If you liked FFX there's a pretty good chance you'll also like FFXIII.

I don't suppose you played FFX-2? The Paradigm system in FFXIII reminds me of FFX-2's Dress Sphere system.

Actually I consider myself a hardcore FF fan yet I really see no problem with FFXIII, if anything it is a very enjoyable entry in the series. not the best but certainly not the worst or close to it.

Sure it is a linear game for the most part, but heck most FF were linear anyway, I never had a problem with them in the past and i certainly don't have a problem with it being linear now.

then again that might be just me, I think I adapt pretty well when it comes to changes in videogame series, after all i can go back and play FF1 whenever i want to and then pop in FFXIII and still have the same amount of enjoyment.

I think the Final Fantasy series just suffers from high standards, and although many will agree FFXIII is a fantastic game there will obviously be others in the millions of FF fans that will say otherwise because they were waiting for something rather unrealistic. Call it "Ocarina of Time Syndrome" if you may.

Re: Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (March 9th, 2010 in the USA)

So months later I finally got around to completing the game's story.

I actually ended up really enjoying FFXIII. Even the music! I want the soundtrack, even.

While the first several chapters of the game (the first 10) are pretty linear, everything opens starting in Chapter 11. While this seems late, considering there are only 13 chapters in all, chapter 11, 12, and 13 combined are about as long as the first ten chapters. So Chapter 11 is really just like the halfway point.

In other words, patience eventually pays off. XD

i Know right. It really does, the game becomes sooo good

I'm working on getting Achievements now. I'm pretty confident that I should be able to get most of them. The only one I don't think I will get is the Treasure Hunter one. I don't see myself being able to get every item in the game. >_<

I thought the story was kind of a rehash of FFX. I for one want the series to go back to the glory days. Don't fix what ain't broke. If you're going to change a game this much then call it something else. XIII seems like a totally different rpg with chocobos crammed into it... not really but you get what i mean

Re: Offical Final Fantasy XIII Thread (March 9th, 2010 in the USA)

I don't care for series that always stay the same no matter what (Zelda for instance). FF 13 is definitely in my top 3 or 4 final fantasys.

I don't care if they change or not as long as they are fun for me. but i agree with your second statement

The news is sad indeed for PS3 fanboys over there, but even the rest of have something to be a little distraught about: The dev team was apparently planning extensive downloadable content for FFXIII, but it all got cut.

"We were planning to make some DLC, but that plan wound up not happening," director Motomu Toriyama told Famitsu magazine in this week's issue. "I'm sorry!" (Toriyama was answering a query about how he said before FFXIII's Japanese release that PS3 owners should "hold on to their saves from the end of the game" for a surprise down the line.)

Why is Square waiting until now to release FFXIII on the 360 over there, by the way? "Because we feel that there are a lot of 360 owners worldwide, and a lot of people in Japan who own nothing but 360s," producer Yoshinori Kitase told Famitsu. "Thanks to the new [slim] system and such, the situation's a lot different than it was in July 2008 [when Square Enix announced at E3 2008 that FFXIII would be PS3-exclusive in Japan]."

That's likely not enough to please Sony fanboys over there, and they'll be doubly angered to learn that the Japanese 360 release of FFXIII amounts to an "International Edition" of the game, with English voices, subtitles in all the European languages you can think of, and "My Hands" from Leona Lewis serving as the main theme song. There's a new easy mode that increases the item drop rate and makes the game easier in other ways, and the package comes with a booklet containing art concepts, scenes from events that cut from the game, and an original novella covering some of the events that take place after FFXIII's ending.

"The scenes we removed had to be cut for tempo-related reasons," Toriyama said. "There's a scene where Serah and Snow are buying a birthday present for Lightning; that got cut because showing Snow going to the bathroom didn't really match with how serious the story was getting!"

The 360 FFXIII is hitting Japan December 16.

It don't really need DLC, but maybe like an underground cave with some really difficult bosses would be cool. Almost 50 hours for me just for the main story with no sidequests is a pretty darn good game to me.
