Offical Silent Hill Home Coming Thread (PS3 & 360 & PC)

Silent Hill V developer The Collective is borrowing a few Christopher Gans film devices for its upcoming game sequel, according to an article in the latest EGM. Inspired by the Silent Hill movie, SHV will feature real-time shifts between reality and the 'Otherworld,' forcing helpless players to suffer through the ghastly transformations of their immediate environments. Enhancing this horror, The Collective will use motion-capture techniques to model the game's monsters, just as the film crew did, creating vivid movement, like the sexually charged lure of the Siam, a perverse fusion of genders.

SHV's central character is Alex Shepard, a 22-year-old wounded war vet, who abandons the care of a VA hospital after he experiences a premonition that his little bro is in danger. When he arrives home to a small New England town he finds brother and father missing, mom in a catatonic state, and ... a lot of darn fog. Though Alex's experiences in combat (not specified, but we've got a hunch...) will play into the game's psychological manifestations, The Collective apparently isn't out to make a political statement. Nope, the priority is still to frighten, and with this goal in mind, the dev team is bringing back the atmospheric screen grain filter, as well as incorporating some new effects like hairline cracks.

Taking advantage of Alex's military background, boss battles will also make an epic return. (The Collective is researching Zelda titles for inspiration.) And, of course, endings will be plentiful, determined less by singular actions and more so by gradual character choices (e.g., how the player treats NPCs). From the article, the right concepts are in place, now we're certain Konami is anxious to watch The Collective deliver.

They're adding a ton of great stuff this time around. Using motion-capture techniques for the monsters, huge boss battles (kind of dissapointed that they're looking to Zelda for inspiration in that area), plenty of endings based on how you treat NPCs, and tons more. :)

Re: New Silent Hill V Information

So will it be more like SH4 or the older SH games? I'm definitely watching this game, in any event.

Re: New Silent Hill V Information

Zelda? ZELDA!? They should be looking at RE4! >:(

Re: New Silent Hill V Information

Wait...Isnt SH a horror game? :?

Re: New Silent Hill V Information

Yep. I think what was meant was they don't want it to be the same as another horror game.

Silent Hill V looks to be really very awesome.

Re: New Silent Hill V Information

Check out the newest issue of EGM too. It's got a 4 page cover story about the new Silent Hill 5. In fact, it's on the cover of the issue!

Update: Silent Hill 5 renamed and slated for September release.

As a Silent Hill fan, when I heard that a Western team was taking it over, automatically skepticism, trepidation... "How are they going to destroy my beloved franchise? What are they going to do to it? Is it going to be a first-person shooter?" I hope not after the room I still have nigtmares from what I heard they beefed up the A.I you start in a town called "sheppards glen before going to silent hill and you some sort of miltary guy, all im saying is please konami don't drop the ball. I love the series and would hate to see it go to nothing.

Re: Silent hill 5 will it be a hit or miss?

In my opinon, I think that Silent Hill 5 will be tooken in a new direction that'll change the series hopefully change for the better.

Re: Silent hill 5 will it be a hit or miss?

Ask yourself this. Is there any reason besides a new developer that you think the game will be bad? I think it'll be great, if Retro Studios can do a 3-D Metroid, another Silent Hill won't be hard for another company.

Retitled to: Silent Hill: Homecoming

For example: Konami has announced that Silent Hill V has been retitled Silent Hill: Homecoming. Now, we don't know the reason for the change, but we're going to hypothesize that people were uncomfortable with an American-developed game that appears to be a departure from previous Silent Hills being one of the main, numbered series. See what we did there? That was just guessing.

They also say that the game will be out in Europe at the end of September. We're going to hypothesize that it will also arrive in America around that same time, but honestly we have no idea. Feel free to offer your slightly less authoritative hypotheses about the name change below.
