Oi! This topic is for the general discussion of the game series of Civilization. I'm planning on getting Civ 4 soon, but I picked up Civ 3 for a mere $10 and love it! It is a great game with loads of depth.

Anyone else a Civ fan?

I am, I probably had at least 300 hours in the 3rd one. I have the 4th too but haven't had much time to play it, but what I've played so far is pretty good.

well please let me know what you guys think of it. I definitely will think about getting it. Thats cool you got the game for $10. Im not too familiar with the whole Civilization series. How is it compared with Warcraft or LOTR BFME? I have tried the game Rise of Nations. Is it more similar to that? I know gamespot and IGN gave it a good rating, like 94 or something. So Im assuming its really fun.

@Pliknon

300 Hours? whoah, i thought my 250 in Guild Wars was a lot. :lol

It is a GREAT game! It is not a Real Time Strategy though, it is a Turn Based Strategy. So it is hard to compare...but like pliknon kinda said the games can take some time. The timeline in Civ III spans from (I think) 4000 BC to 2050 AD. There is alot of stuff to manage though. I didn't get the 250 page instruction book with my copy, so I had to borrow my friends copy of the book. Its a monster!

Let me think about some of the stuff to manage...

Corruption, pollution, military exploits, diplomacy, Wonder building, roads, luxuries, and of course gold. Lots of stuff to do, but you will almost certainly love it If you have the time to play it.

There is online in 3 and 4, but in three you have to have the online expansion... i think it's play the world. There's another expansion too that seemed to improve it a little bit. All in all though the online wasn't that great, it was the single player that made it.

In the 4th one I haven't really tried it out, but it's suppose to be really improved from the 3rd.

Well I got the game last night guys. I havent had a chance to try it out yet, but I will keep ya updated.

I'll show some of the depth of this series off right here.

Well, right now, in Civ 4, the entire world is about to get rocked. I'm leading the Indian Empire as Ghandi, and we are the most prosperous and advanced civ.

However, my closest ally is the American Empire, who had war declared on him by Bismarck of Germany and Louis XIV of France. He will almost certainly turn to me for help, since we are close geographically. I could use this chance to

A) Annhilate the Americans, but in doing so killing off a close ally and trade partner, which in turn
-leaves me open to attack by the Germans and French, who dislike me because I refuse to trade with them or open my borders to them
B) Help the Americans out, which might let me eliminate the French and Germans, who are rivals of mine. This could lead to
-me turning America against the Persians, who are my biggest rival as of right now. Doing this would let us sandwich them in and sack their cities.
C) Or, I could remain neutral and let America fend for itself. This would lead to
-My only potential ally being killed, which would mean
-I would be surrounded by enemies,a nd
-I would reap the benefits of taking some American cities for example (hey, they want to join the glorious Indian Empire)

However, my military is stretched thin and diplomacy is the only thing keeping my cities safe. But, my military posseses superior technology and is highly mobile. I also have the added benefit of being the founder of Islam, Christianity, Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. This means I have great control over the populations of other civs if I convert them. I have the highest culture rating as well.

Anyways, Civ 4 owns. The depth is awesome!

Ironically, the biggest problem with Civ is that the first one is near perfect. Sure it looked crap even back then, but the gameplay, depth and all that is near prefection. So how do you improve an almost prefect game? :? I've tried Civ2 and 3, but didn't enjoy them as much as the first one. I'll probably try Civ4 some day, but I'm not in a hurry. If it sucks, it's a waste of money. If it rocks, I'm stuck for a few months. :lol

well like i said this type of game isnt my type. I definitely see how people love this game though.
