OXM - 'bribing' people to buy their mag?

The staff of the Official Xbox Magazine has announced that its February 2008 issue, available in stores on January 15th, will include a trio of exclusive playable tracks for the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band on its pack-in DVD. The disc will contain the following songs:

Bang Camaro - "Rock Rebellion"
Count Zero - "Shake"
Freezepop - "Sprode"
All three bands have made appearances in previous Harmonix-developed titles, with other tracks from Bang Camaro and Freezepop already included on the Rock Band retail disc. OXM Editor-in-Chief Francesca Reyes told Joystiq this morning that the tracks can be downloaded onto the hard drive for use with Rock Band, thus eliminating the need to use the disc after the data transfer.

No word yet on availability of the exclusive tracks for PlayStation 3 owners.

Although I can honestly say I've never heard any of those songs (that I know of), I disagree with this practice on principle.

IMO OXM is a horrible excuse for a magazine, and it's sad that they have to resort to this to sell their mag.

They should spend some of the money they waste getting these exclusives on having better content in the actual magazine! I've seen Sunday ads that are thicker than most OXM issues these days.

I hope they make the songs available on the XBL Marketplace eventually.
 
So? The only reason I had a Game Informer subscription was because I wanted 10% off every time I purchased used games. And that was for a solid year. I pulled a "special offer" card out of a friend's Car Craft Magazine one year because they offered 78% off the regular price. A year for $10? Score. Bribing people to buy magazines is a common practice. And although their integrity may be in question, it's very effective.

I'd say it would be a must have if they included Sammy Haggar's "Trans Am." :rockin
 
This isnt the first time that magazines have come with bonus dvd's in them.

Game Informer is actually a good magazine, though. They often get pretty good exclusives, and the content is much better overall. Better previews, better reviews, better editorials, etc. Plus, like you said, 10% off used games for a whole year is a good deal. You also get 12 issues for $15 (it's not $10 anymore, hasn't been for about two years). OXM is $10 for ONE issue. ONE. And a year's subscription is about $25. So to get these three songs, minimum of $10. It just doesn't seem that worth it to me.

But you know, opinions and all. ^_^

OXM did an expansion for Morrowind a long time ago...

Yeah, that too.

The last time I paid $10 for OXM was when they had the Eternal Sonata demo before anyone else. Boy, was I mad when they put in on the Marketplace later for free. >:( I loved the demo but that was easily $10 badly spent.
 
This doesn't really matter to me. I mean, if I don't want the extra tracks that I've never heard of, I simply won't buy the magazine.
 
If the magazine was $5, you'd save money. Those songs will probably total $6 on the Marketplace.
