You guys are right. They're very polite and very helpful. The only thing that's a problem is that my cordless phone is 5 years older than God and the connection can be rough, but sometimes their accent is just too thick to understand.I often have them speak up to help. :lol
I encounter those problems frequently as well.

Re: I'm Not Sure What To Think

I can't really agree. Outsourcing is cheaper initially but will cost you more money in the long run. At least that's the trend at HP. I'm a field engineer for HP. That means I go fix servers, desktops, laptops, and sometimes printers. Tech support and dispatch are all run from Spain, Costa Rica, India, etc. Now, all of my customers tell me the same thing, at least the ones in IT, and that's that these people know nothing. In fact, they've told me some of the crap they've had to deal with. I know it's true because I've had to speak with them on a few occasions and they know nothing about the product. They even argued with me about the technical aspects of an issue which I was clearly right on. Their solution had nothing to do with the problem and could not have possibly fixed it. I don't even have to talk to them to know they don't know anything as I get sent parts to fix an issue that I know right off isn't going to fix it.

Don't even get me started on the dispatchers. All in all, outsourcing is costing HP, in my division alone, millions of dollars per month nation wide. There are so many problems with outsourcing. It's just not a good idea on so many levels.

Re: I'm Not Sure What To Think

Outsourcing is bad if you're an employee. Outsourcing is good if you're an employer.

It's an unfortunate side-effect of capitalism + globalization.

hmm... I use a combo of EGA and GameFAQs.
Kotaku and IGN are pretty good as well imo.

Re: I'm Not Sure What To Think

Out of all of the ones I've spoken with, they have either been working from India,Philippines or Panama, and it got me to thinking. Why am I not getting any techs on the line from the USA or Canada?
I mentioned this to a couple of people from the chess club I'm in about it and I got an interesting response from the bulk of them. They say that these big companies hire people from these countries because it's cheaper to pay techs from a foreign country than it is in the USA and Canada.

Exactly what was already said; employees in those countries are cheaper.

Minimum wage is a farse. Increases in minimum wage have led to decreases in available jobs. When overhead (by paying expensive North American employees) is more than it needs to be, those making the big financial decisions make less profit. This is no good to the shareholders, therefore, it is changed. The US and Canadian employment is downsized while foreign employees are hired for cheaper. Then, the overseas employees are happy that they have jobs. The shareholders are happy that they're making more money. The only ones not happy in the whole mess are the pesky North American middle/working class.... But that's okay, they can survive off of credit cards for a bit.

Re: I'm Not Sure What To Think

I like speaking to people who English is their first language. I hate trying to understand some of these people from India.

Minimum wages are good things. People who demand and expect to be able to live off of their labor is a good thing. Minimum wages are set in response to increasing costs of living so that a minimum standard of living can be maintained, not because of a "pesky" middle class that is unsatisfied with exorbitant luxury.

The problem is not that people doing honest work expect an honest wage that reflects the living standards of the society they live in. The problem is a mixture of the capitalist ideal (that pursuit of self-interest will benefit those around you i.e. trickle down effect) with globalization (the wealth you make off of people in one area trickles down to people in another). Shareholders are beholden to money, not the people who make or buy their products, so they'll hire what is essentially slave labor if it saves them a buck. That's not good for anyone who is not a shareholder. Not the slaves who are being worked to death because that's the only way they can get a job, nor those whose jobs have been lost because they live in a society that demands a certain level of wealth for them to survive in it.

Capitalism cannot operate properly when desperation, not innovation, ambition, or ingenuity, is the most valuable resource.

Re: I'm Not Sure What To Think

Well said. I think you missed my sarcasm about the "pesky middle class" though.

Minimum wage is set in response to inflation, which is a response to debts. If money has less value when paid back, it is in the best interest of the borrower. However, it does not make up for interest on the initial loan. It's a broken system since the few control the majority of resources.

Hi Esteemed Members!

Great start to the day I tell ya.We had to move some of our stuff to storage today before we move the rest to the new house. It was raining and cold packing the van,and this awesome van dad borrowed from a friend decided to kick the bucket half way to the storage garage on a major city roadway just booming with traffic. It was truly a blast while dad and I among two other drivers helped push the van onto a side parking area for a used car dealership. How sweet is that?A car giving out right in the area where a used car dealership is located. You can't say one of them car salesman didn't have a perfect in for trying to sell us another vehicle.

At any rate, dad's friend who loaned him this beautiful specimen of quality vehicles finally showed up with a new battery because even if we got a charge from someone, they didn't think this van would make it the rest of the way.I don't see how,but I'm no car expert. Finally we made it to the storage area only to find out that the wingnut who owned the storage area had numbered each of the separate 75 available storage areas screwed up the numbering sequence which took us an additional 20 minutes to find our specific storage room.
At long last,we finally got it all stored away.Moments like this are what makes life all worth living. We are so blessed.

Godspeed.
Kaz
