I hate the style, fake retro is really, really lame. And the new game was GOD AWFUL.

I see, so compared to the THE WIZARD you would say this is worse than compared to every other pile of video game movie crap we've been shoveled to for the past 20 years?

The new game is GOD AWFULLY a rip off of River City Ransom? or the fact it lacks online gameplay? Yeah FAKE TRIBUTES are really really lame obviously. Yet, this is coming from a guy who hates Sonic the Hedgehog, which is obviously dumb as well.

I don't consider this fake retro, when the movies and comics don't point it out like you wish it. Having hidden purposes brings a nice variety, instead of looking up at the screen and say, "Hey he just said Sonic the Hedgehog" or "Super Mario Bros!" Which is something I'm really sick of in some films that try to do this. Throwing a curve ball in the film and comics was probably the best thing to see if you're awake.

Tell me Spartan, what ways could you make a better retro tribute film? It's busting my balls each day I have to see you speak like this.

Btw Spartan, do you hate Anime as much as me? I ask this, since Scott Pilgrim is borderline anime.

Wait what was retro about the movie besides the references to two NES games? (three if you count the Double Dragon one)

Sounds to me like you just don't like beat 'em ups. The game plays like River City Ransom which is one of the best beat 'em ups for the NES, hell one of the best beat 'em ups of all time and the graphics used fit the style of the comic perfectly

Honestly, I don't think it sucks. I'm actually indifferent about it. I haven't seen it but I might once it's available for rent. It looks decent but it never really made me want to see it. As for the game, I might pick it up eventually if the price ever drops.

Now, I said it sucks because I wanted to hear from people why it's good. It was sneaky, I know.

@ Mega
As a consumer and not a producer of products such as films, it's not my job to be able to produce better movies than the actual producers of films. Straw man arguments can stay at the door. I can freely critique movies like Scott Pilgrim and refuse to pay money to see them, because that's what consumers do in a capitalist society.

@ snatcher
I was talking about Scott Pilgrim in general.
And I love beat em ups. Shank and Castle Crashers are some of my favorite games of this generation. I just like good beat em ups.

Ah okay, see unlike Spartan's rambling of unnecessary reasoning. This makes more sense and has a logic.

Jeez. It's just his opinion which he is entitled to. I don't see why he is being attacked for it.

There's nothing wrong with his opinion, it's his response that has me concerned. That is nothing like Spartan at all.

Well you snuck into the theater, punched a hooker, and didn't like the Nintendo tape movies. Not saying your opinion is bad, but this has to be the oddest responses I've seen from you. It's not my job to see what's going on here, but it's obvious as daylight that something isn't right here.

Still don't see how you can call SPvsTW a bad beat 'em up. Pretty much River City Ransom with all of the Technos Beat 'em ups combined all wrapped up in in some Scott Pilgrim Packaging.

Honestly if you don't like Technos Beat 'em Ups I'm guessing you haven't played alot of beat 'em ups.

I don't get the SP hate either. Dude made a comic and he loves video games so he throws in a few references it's all for fun. It's never really like he's shoving these things down the viewer's/reader's throat. My girlfriend, sisters, and some buds didn't get stuff like Crash and The Boys that made me go heh but that didn't mean I enjoyed the movie more than they did.
Maybe I'm missing what you're talking about but I understand if you hate the style, I don't really get where the fake retro comment came from.

The game is fake retro. It is not a retro game but uses retro control schemes and graphics, not to mention gameplay. The comic or movie not so much.

I prefer games that aren't afraid to have grown with the times. The retro graphics are possibly permissible as homage, but not the old gameplay. That sits sour in my mouth especially when compared to newer games in the genre. The SP game could have the retro graphics but 2010 gameplay.

I had the same argument with my SP loving roommate. To each their own, but I found the SP game horribly flawed.

If I may ask what is your take on Megaman 9 and 10? And if I may say so, almost all beat-em-ups are the same gameplay wise.

EDIT: If they didn't use the art-style for SP I would have been highly disappointed. It goes perfectly with the art from the series.

I didn't like them, to be honest. But I've never really liked Megaman outside of Legends.

It's just a matter of taste. I dislike them because they are so old school, and people like Mega and you like them because they are.

Inability to move and attack is an issue (intentional, I know) I can't forgive in a game made in 2010. When a game like Shank has such fluid, lethal, sexy controls, SP feels stiff as a corpse in comparison.

I won't argue any further, both sides are decided on what is what. However I will say this!

These next 4 weeks are INSANE!!! This week: Metroid: Other M and Valkyria Chronicles 2. The following is Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. The 14th is of Course Halo Reach. And then FINALLY, on the 21st Civilization V is coming out. I don't know what to do....

Well not so much like them in my case, more like grew up with them. :) It's sad when I'm older than Mega Man!

You having a rough week Spartan? Just worried about man :( I've never seen you upset.

I find it funny that you knock the graphics, when games like Shank and Castle Crashers look like games you can find on Newgrounds although I'm aware that the creator of Castle Crashers made newground games like Alien Hominid I'm sure he could make the games in like 2.5D or something but that's the style he uses, much like Scott Pilgrims sprites are made by Paul Robertson which he made in the same style he made that Pirate Baby Cabana Battle video
Most 2D Beat 'em ups aren't even that different from each other, hell Castle Crashers is pretty much the same as any beat 'em up, it's not doing anything that hasn't been done before. I played the Demo for shank and honestly I didn't have as much fun. Not saying the game was bad just I liked SP more.

Or people have fun with it? My girlfriend doesn't even have anything older than a PS2 but likes the game and she would not give a game like Skies of Arcadia a chance because it looked old, my friend Ben is a total d-bag when it comes to old games and assumes they all suck but he loves the SP games

Also, out of curiousity. How far did you get in playing SP?

That's an odd comparison. The two games are nothing alike. However, you CAN move and attack in Scott Pilgrim at the same time...after leveling up the first or second time (which happens in less than 10 mins if you play it right). But, they're two wildly different games. Shank is alright, but for $15, I could get Scott Pilgrim (which is a way longer game), and a few Rock Band tracks or what not.

But, this is all of course opinionated. It's all personal preference as I believe you stated before. No harm, no foul. :)
