Post Up Your Computer

The "Death of PC Games" thread inspired me to make this thread. Post up your specs and what you paid. Also, post up some pics if you have any. I'll start off.

This is my main system which acts as my gaming computer, server, and I also do a lot of music and video work as well as some graphic design. I paid about $2,100 for everything.

This is my backup system. It's just a P3 1GHz with a TNT2 Ultra. This was my main computer a long time ago. I use this system to let my nieces and nephews play games. Nobody uses my main system. The computer on the right is a Packard Bell. It's got a whopping P1 133MHz CPU with 48MB of RAM. I use this old beast for playing DOS era games. The P3 was about $1,300 when it was new and the Packard Bell was $3,200 back in 1994.

This is my work room. This is where is I work on computers and car parts. You can see there are a ton of them strewn about and a few computers. This is also where I keep my laptop. I use it to do most everything that doesn't need a lot of power since I don't like to be stuck to a desk. It has a P4 2.5GHz and a FX5400. I paid about $350 for the laptop.

Wow, nice setup, it's extremely clean :) I build and sell PC's and right now all I have is my DOS machine, kind of like what you have. It has-
ASUS MEW motherboard
P3 coppermine at 850Mhz
Radeon 9250 OC'd a bit
WD 40gb 7200rpm HDD
256MB RAM
Sony CD-Rom
Windows 98SE

Also have a newer Dell desktop and an old laptop, not worth going through specs, though :P

Thanks!

It's still a good system for it's age. Besides, you can never replace those old DOS games. ;)

Yeah, I've been in the IT industry for years. I decided to branch out and start my own computer business. My main system is the result of cheap parts. Retail it would have been close to $2,700 for everything.

As for clean, I'm a bit on the OCD side. So much that I'm not satisfied with the cable management as it stands in the main system. I'm thinking about making even less obtrusive.

Man, I might have a problem. :lol

Oh man, you'd go nuts over my rig than...cables everywhere, lol. That's cool that you are starting your own business. I have only built about 7 PC's so far but I really enjoy it. I am sure people can't understand what is fun about building a PC, but once you do it, than you know why ;) It's like playing a video game; it's challenging, but the end result is extremely gratifying and rewarding!

I'd post a picture, but there's too much of a mess and my camera's a 3.5-4 hour drive away.

Wow! That thing is a beast :o

^Yeah, I regret not going with an SLI motherboard.

I have to keep this chained to the wall and feed it a small child at least once every three days to ensure my safety, else it'll choke me to death with the power cable :p

Does it look something like this:

If so, then yes. :lol

Here's what it looked like when I was done with it:

As far as computer building goes, I think that people that like to work hands on enjoy it. I've built thousands of systems and it doesn't matter what is in it. I still enjoy it. I love traing about cars and engines and putting them back together. Some people like collecting bugs, now that, I don't understand.

Yes, very nice. How's Vista treating you? I'm avoiding it until SP1. I'm just glad to see you have 4GB and aren't using XP.

^I've been thoroughly enjoying Vista. Sure, it took a bit to get used to, but I can't go back to XP now; it just feels too archaic and lacking in the features I use most.

It runs faster, does more, and I have yet to encounter any Vista-created problems. Any and all BSODs are because of my own errors (overclocking way too far, hacking around with drivers, etc.) and the errors of my professor (our programming assignment was to make a version of Minesweeper in assembly, and the example program he gave us was 16-bit, unsupported in the 64-bit version of Vista without using DOSBox). Other than that I love it.

SP1 should be out soon, there's a release candidate of it available for download now.

What kind of cooling does your system have?

Hmm, kind of the way I felt going from 2000 to XP. My beef is with how many resources it uses. I also have a small nitpick. I hate how it displays the folder image if you select thumbnails. ;)

But that's just me being difficult.

Case has a 120mm and an 80mm for intake, and a 120mm and the power supply for exhaust, plus the stock 8800GTX cooler. My CPU has a Zalman 9700.

Right now I see no reason for me to go to Vista. I have my spare compy with Debian Linux and my main with XP/Ubuntu Lintux machine.

You're right, you probably don't. From what I remember of you posting your specs, you can't take advantage of DX10, so there really is no point in you upgrading yet.

A lot of the resources are due to things like SuperFetch, Aero and the like. It's possible to disable them, but Vista automatically does that for you when it detects that you're doing something resource-intensive, such as gaming. I'm sure you can handle the few nanoseconds it takes to clear the RAM out for another use :D

Thats the main reason I want Vista too. DX10 looks so good.
