PS3 Price........

But weren't they going to wait until 2010 to put the copy protection in IF they decide to put it in? If it is then by that time we'll probably be getting ready for the PS4 and blu-ray players will probably be really cheap by then....

It's still up in the air. It's not decided yet. It can be immediate, or it can be till 2010. We'll find out more when they release the info.

Thats a kinda interesting point everyone is making but why start the price that high. if it were 200$ less i would take is in a heart beat.

Because the blu-ray laser that the PS3 has is expensive. It literally costs twice as much as they are charging for the PS3.

I'd hope we aren't "getting ready" for the Ps4 in 2010 - that's ridiculous to think that the lifespan of consoles would have dropped to 3 years, maybe 4 at that rate. Nonsense. That would mean Microsoft succeeded, but I'd highly doubt this possibility of time line.

Ummm.... The original Xbox came out in November of '01 and the 360 came out in November of '05. Now I'm not a math major but Ithink thats....carry the 2 subtract the 6.... um 4 years

yea i dont get it. he talks to smart for me to understand

My bad, I apologize

Essentially, when Microsoft entered this "game", one of their agendas was to shorten console lifespan in an effort to gain traction quicker. You can see this trend with the release of the 360, as you stated, a mere 4 years after the X Box at a time of questionable release (considered "early"). If the Ps4 were to be out by 2010, this would be retaliation on Sony's behalf, likely only to occur of Microsoft actually gains momentum, as otherwise Sony has no need to shorten the console lifespan, in fact the opposite is true (benefit is gained from the length thereof).

So the longer the console is actively strong the better. Makes sense

Right, or so it would seem. You see, for example in Sony's case, it's perfectly reasonable to desire a long lifespan. What this does is allow extreme and further profitability from the same old unit. Whereas entering a new generation is "unproven" even though sometimes presumed. Money will most definitely be on the line at the entrance of a new generation, thanks to the concept of loss-leader-hardware.

HOWEVER, if one is to look at this from Microsoft's viewpoint: their agenda is to gain market share, not to do well with X Box. X Box is a toy. Fake money to be thrown about the virtual marketplace in an attempt to gain the mindshare of users. The same could be said of the 360 or any subsequent hardware, depending on how well it does. From their standpoint, that is to say an extremely rich company which focuses on mindshare for market infiltration, the best line of movement would be to make each generation come about faster. This allows them to do exactly what they are attempting to do right now. Whether or not that succeeds or not depends on a variety of factors, such as Sony's in house decisions (price, price, price, eck) and other third parties (like Nintendo), not just what Microsoft does or desires.

If Microsoft were to supercede Sony in place of home console popularity, you would probably expect to notice an increase in the life of Microsoft consoles from that point thereon, as a decrease would, as Sony in the previous "round", possibly be derogatory to their existence whereas the current market is proven.

Tada.. :) Good?

OK..... um........... yea so...... Microsoft is trying to nab attention toward themselves FIRST and if they were to pass Sony as the gaming giant, then Sony would try get attention and release consoles every 4 years in an attempt to draw attention to our already short attemtion spans.... idk

The whole point will be that you can watch blu-Ray movies on a $500 PS3...  and the component cables may not work... but chances are they will....
and can you people please stop saying the $500 PS3 is not upgradeable... it is. You will be able to upgrade your HDD, buy expansion slots for the Flash cards, and buy WIFI adapters for it.

Edit: I am not a Sony Fanboy, but you guys are spreading too many lies about this machine....

That may be the case, but why the hell would you want to spend that amount of money? I would just get the $600 to begin with, because if you get the $500 bundle and then actually upgrade it, you might pay more than you would have with the $600 package. My problem with Sony is that they always pull this crap with their systems; make the system relatively inexpensive and then get money by selling accessories that should be optional but really aren't (like the multitap, if you wanted to play 4 player games on the PS2). Or that 4 gig card for the PSP that costs more than the system itself does. No thank you. Sony needs something better than MSG 4 to take my hard-earned money.

hold up... where do you have a source that says these items are upgradeable?

So far they have been said to not be upgradeable....

The Hard drive is internal... what.. you open up your system and void the warranty? Unless they have decided to add on a drive bay somewhere.... or allow external drives (even more expensive).... I don't see how it's going to be done.

Let me rephrase.
Sony's multiplayer is a scam. Buy a Nintendo 64.

The system is not going to have official Sony PS3 upgrades, but that does not mean you can not upgrade via 3rd party PC peripherals which can be done through the USB. But like you said it will be quite expensive.
