PS3 Price........

hold up... where do you have a source that says these items are upgradeable?

So far they have been said to not be upgradeable....

The Hard drive is internal... what.. you open up your system and void the warranty?   Unless they have decided to add on a drive bay somewhere.... or allow external drives (even more expensive).... I don't see how it's going to be done.

I'd hope we aren't "getting ready" for the Ps4 in 2010 - that's ridiculous to think that the lifespan of consoles would have dropped to 3 years, maybe 4 at that rate. Nonsense. That would mean Microsoft succeeded, but I'd highly doubt this possibility of time line.

why is that so ridiculous? I said we'd be getting ready for the new console(ie. developers begin their projects for the console, the current one begins to lose support, etc.)... I never said it will be out in 2010... It could come out in 2011 or 2012... and a 5 or 6 year lifespan is not ridiculous. Plus by 2010 Blu Ray Players will probably be more affordable to the average joe... which was my whole point
The ps2 which dominanted this gen is goin to have somewhere around six or seven years before its next console...

Hey - it'd be really cool if you decided to read my posts! But it looks like you don't! :-)!

maybe because they are too long and sophisticated for our short attention spans. Well for me anway :lol

Technically it's not going to have official PS3 upgrades from Sony, which is what everyone is talking about. Just read the latest PSM or GameInformer with the PS3 on the cover.

But you're right also as it still can be upgraded.

not trying to pick on you fatty :)

I'm just saying.... what Creepin is saying.  And How many USB ports are there going to be?  I didn't hear that/.

@ Fatty's blu-ray comment being more cheap..... well.. that's if the format survives. Not to pick on it.... but it does have a harder battle to fight IMO.

lol I skimmed your posts... but the only thing I got from them was an essay on why sony would want a long lifespan... and why M$ wanted a short one....maybe i just didn't get what you were trying to say.

I think it has like 6 or 8.... not sure though. And you were never saying that. The first two pages of this topic all you were saying was that the PS3 can't be upgraded... you were saying it's impossible...

And uh I think blu-ray has the easier battle... Since it does have way more support than HD-DVD it should make it the favorite to win the format wars.

I think blu-ray has a tougher battle. It's already got, and deservedly so, a reputation for being more expensive. The only way I see blu-ray winning is if it's leaps and bounds better than HD-DVD. Which I think it will be.

Here's an article about the format "wars" that raises some good and valid points.

Shrug. The statements are still made and quite accurate.

ok... IT IS impossible to upgrade... but if they are going to do 3rd party USB expansions... that's different... And my question is.. how will they allow a second external hard drive to be added via usb? Will there be a controller on the Ps3 that allows mulitple hard drives... since there will be a smaller internal hard drive initially. OR will the PS3 have to be modded to use more than 1 hard drive?

regardless... there will be 2 physically different systems.

Which is bad news bears. Bad Sony. Bad. Slap slap slap.

The problem we're going to see with both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD (IMO) is that the difference is primarily in the storage space, compared to actual quality. I mean it is an upgrade, but the difference between the DVD format used now and Blu-Ray or HD-DVD is not going to be quite as dramatic as the difference between VHS and DVD was.

Secondly, the ownership rate of TVs that would actually be able to display Blu-Ray in all its glory is not going to be a high number for a while.

Personally, I don't see a need to buy a system that costs $600 because it has features I'm not going to use, when I already own a $400 system (XB360) that has features that I actually do use.

Plus the big fear will the the third party developers. Will they be willing to pump out two different versions of the same game on the PS3 and Xbox in order to take advantage of the PS3s disc space and slight power advantage or will the just develop games for the 360 and port them to the PS3? That may hurt PS3 in the long run.

Consider how some things worked this generation: titles were developed for Ps2 and ported to XBX with little to no enhancements, very infrequently would I say it "took advantage of XBX hardware" when being ported.

Same situation, likely. Though I am not positive which way the wheel will turn this time.

Right so you'd have a 50 gig disk but a game that only really uses 5 to 10 gigs, which I'm sure would be put on a regular DVD disc and not a Bluray. I think that is where Sony may get hurt.

You got it. There is absolutely no need for this immense storage capacity.

Unlike Nintendo who re-release handhelds every year and a half or so.

Yeah, they sure do.

The original Game Boy came out in 1989. This was immediately followed up by the Game Boy Color in 1991, and then the Game Boy Advance came out in 1993. Shortly after having extreme hardware issues concerning failure to recognize media put in the device, Nintendo came out with a smaller, slimmer version of the GBA called the SP in 1996. This version actually works! No errors reading media or anything. Thanks for buying both. Then in 1999 Nintendo came out with the DS! A brand new system! A leap in technology, for sure. The only problem with this system is the extremely long loading times and, again, problems reading media. After everyone ran out and bought this new, amazing system from Nintendo, they started to break. This is where Nintendo got the amazing idea to release a new version! The DS Lite. This version was smaller and slimmer than the original model, and had no problems reading media input. This time, for sure, when you buy the system it will most definitely work and not be the result of planned obsolesence.

Yeah man. You're totally right. Why don't you go look up some dates and learn a little bit out there before making baseless assumptions? Furthermore, why don't you respond to my posts with a little more context and content? These one liners are really fascinating and all, but my time can be better spent with more information as an actual reply. The Game Boy never had a nearly decade long streak. No way.

you can't possibly blame them for updating like every other company out there.

Let alone... if you can blame them for Special editions... Then let the blame be extended to all other companies.

Different colours are one thing - Collectors want to buy those, so be it.

The updates between the GBA to SP and DS to Lite were less than two years each.

That's just ridiculous.

And no, I don't like it when other companies do it either - I refuse to buy an Ipod for the very same reason.

I'll stick with my minidisc player

Shrug. I prefer the old model DS my self. At least they're not in Sony's situation. Their consumers would have benefitted from a refit of the console A LOT SOONER. I've gone through three old model Ps2s. Gets old.
