PS3...thoughts so far

Yeah the wii is pretty awesome. I wish I had one :'( I voted for the 360 though. I think the wii is just kinda gimmicky and after the novelty of the controller wears off, it will still be good, just not as good as the 360.

Well the 360 will always be ahead of Nintendo as far as sales are concerned. The gimmickyness of the Wii wears off after you've had it for a couple of weeks. I was so excited to play Super Paper Mario today. I called EB Games to make sure and they said it was tommorow. I mean c'mon people. God of War II was post-poned until midnight that night, Paper Mario got changed to tommorow, get with the program people.

I'm just saying that a lot of people only choose one console, and if it was the PS3 they chose, then Oblivion is a great title to own, regardless of it not being exclusive.

Although, if I was only getting a console for Oblivion, I'd get the 360 for the obvious reason of price.

And obviously the 360 and Wii have sold more consoles considering they've been out for Months longer. Now that the PS3 has just entered the race in Europe and Australia, it can pick up on sales.

I got a PS3 awhile ago. Sadly, it's been collecting dust for the most part.

I was really excited for Resistnace, which was my first game. However, it didn't live up to its hype. It was a fun game, but I just couldn't get that excited about it.

I bought Virtua Fighter 5. Well, I have never been that into fighting games, so I can't say much about this. It was fun for awhile, but I got bored with it. The only reason I'll consider keeping it is so that I'll have more to my currently weak PS3 games collection. :(

I downloaded the demo of MotorStorm, was pretty fun. I was actually going to pick it up the other day, but I decided to go with Super Paper Mario instead.

The next two games I'll get are MotorStorm and Oblivion.

The BluRay is a nice feature, but I don't usually buy movies anyways - just rent 'em. Whatever, I'll eventually get some just so I have some reason to have a BluRay player. :lol

Still, the PS3 hasn't been very fun so far. But things will start to pick up when Lair and Warhawk comes out, which should be sweet

If you're looking to get a PS3, I'd say wait. Especially if you already have another system. Just get games for the systems you do have, and then get a PS3 later this year when better titles come out.

I do wish the PS3 had the entitlements like they were going to have. The achievements on the Xbox 360 are quite fun and addicting. It might have been smart to add those, but whatever.

only reason I love the PS3 right now, is solely due to Virtua Fighter 5...and the wireless controllers made by Sony feel so good when playing Capcom Vs. SNK 2 from my PS2 :) We get to play the PS3 at work on a big 6 foot by 8 foot projection screen...it's quite lovely.

In defense of EB, I feel I have to enlighten the ignorant on the difference between ship date, street date, and the date the game arrives in the store.

In GameStop's computer and on GameStop's website, games are listed by the ship date. That's the day the game ships from the manufacturer and is sent out to retailers. It is not the day the game actually comes out, because even if they send it express overnight it's still going to take a night (obviously) so it won't arrive at GameStop until the following day. So when you call and ask when a game is coming out, if they are smart they will look at the date (for example if it said 5/29/07) and tell you that the game comes out on 5/30, because it's going to take at least a night to arrive at the store after it is shipped out on the 29. Same thing goes for the online store.

Games that are street-dated, on the other hand, are in fact sent to us beforehand. Games like God of War II, and Spider Man 3. However, sometimes, especially with big games, all retailers are instructed not to sell street dated games until a certain date (Spider Man 3 was street dated for 5/4, so no one sold it before then unless they broke street date). So even though we get the games early, we have to hold it or the company is fined thousands of dollars for breaking street date.

There is a very nice FAQ on the website that explains all this stuff. http://www.gamestop.com/gs/help/prerelease.asp

Does the PS3 really "suck" as you claim? Or is it all just media hype?

You say it's not selling at all. I say that in the first three months Sony sold about 902,000 consoles. It's closest rival, the 360, sold in the same time 854,000 units it's first three months out. Oddly enough it so far outsold even the PSX and PS2 during the same span.

Oh, but it's the lack of games!! Games, you say!! I read somewhere that the PS3 has more titles than the PS2 launch. Or somewhere around the same amount as any other console at launch.

But but but they discontinued the 20GB console!! That means they must be suffering!! But in reality the 60GB was flying off the shelves and the 20s were just sitting there. Yeah, it was the cheaper option, but if you're saving up for a PS3, why not go and get the one with all the bells and whistles anyway?

Summary?? Stop believing what half-baked "experts" at various web sites that say that the PS3 sucks for no particular reason and get the facts straight. Or so help me I'll turn this car around!!

EDIT.

Gordon, that link gave the PS3 a bad review? And that it sucks? An 80 out of one hundred is far from "sucking."

I agree 100%. Good Job!

I think that what you're trying to say is "yes, the PS3 does suck because of no unique games, high price point, and useless technology". In that regard, you're right. You can hold true and love the PS3...or maybe you're just going against the crowd cause it's the cool thing to do...but in MY opinion...the PS3 sucks. :)

Oh and if you read Gordon's post...it he said to check the kickstartnews.com rating on that page. It gave it a 60/100.

Going against the crowd is always the best idea. Because going with the crowd means a better chance of getting trampled to death in European sporting events. :D

Seriously, every industry has a low priced product and a high priced product. We as consumers have the ability to choose what fits our needs based on the benefits of certain features. Don't want to shell out the green for one? Don't. Simple as that. But this seething hatred of the PS3 because of the price puzzles me. If it were the same price as the Wii, would people complain? Hard to say.

Useless technology is all around us. And game consoles are no exception. Simply put, every game console contains useless technology. I will never benefit financially because I have game consoles. My health will not get better because of them. They consume time, make my electric bill go up (I'm staring at you, Xbox) and generally take up space. But, they provide me with hours of entertainment. So to say that the PS3 is chock full of useless technology strikes me as funny, because so is the Wii and 360.

I know that as I get older, my memory fades a bit. I can't remember how many times I lose my keys. But the PS3's drought on unique and good games seems to me as no surprise. Absolutely zero consoles made had a good assortment of games right out of the gate. And I seem to hear the same rants after every debut.

So no, I am by no means in love with the PS3. I feel attatched to my kidneys, I like one house payment, and I like having one job. But does this mean that I should join the uninformed masses in this crusade to kill the PS3 before it matures? No. Because it makes no sense to me. It's like pitching a fit for wanting a steak on a cheeseburger budget.

I'm still not going to have an opinion of the PS3 until it's been out longer. I judge systems by what games they have. PS3 doesn't have anything special besides Oblivion, that's fine. The Wii hardly has any great games either, and it's been out since November here.

Don't forget about Resistance.

I'm gonna go along with you on this one. It's just not right to judge a console so early in its lifetime.

It is when it has failing sales, when it's losing all its exclusives, and when they actually had to pull the $500 ones. It came out a week before the Wii, the Wii has seven million sales, the PS3 at a horrible three million.

People haven't bought the PS3 yet because none of the system sellers are out yet. Once FF 13 and MGS 4 come out, the PS3 will start selling well.

As for exclusives, it may have lost some, but there are still plenty of great looking PS3 exclusives.

Sony pulled the $500 one because everyone who bought a PS3 wanted the better, more expensive one. Now I'm not really sure why people wanting a better version of the console is showing that the PS3 is doing well, but whatever makes you feel good. :D

Sales, like I said will pick up when games start picking up. A price drop, which will probably come after the PS3 has been out for a year or so will also help sales considerably.

"Horrible three million." So three million gamers purchased the PS3. And that's bad? Seems funny to me.

And like I said before. In the PS3's first three months, it sold 50 thousand more consoles than the 360 did in it's first three months.

And why did the Wii sell better than the PS3 so far? Because Nintendo banked on casual gamers buying their console, while Sony focused on the more hard core gamers. So yeah, the Wii's sales will reflect this.

This is like declaring the winner of a race after the first lap, and completely ignoring the other 499.
