That's cool. I was wondering how they would handle having PAL games in an NTSC territory. Looks like Blu-Ray is shaping up to be a really good storage medium.
 
Okay I am starting to warm back up to Sony. Because this will expand the game library by leaps and bounds!!
 
I hope this isn't an early April Fools joke. I really hope it's true. Maybe Sony realized there's a huge market for importing games so they might as well make it a little easier for gamers. This is glorious news indeed. I have US and Japanese PS2's and I'm excited to hear I won't have to do the same for the PS3. I wonder if imported PS1 and PS2 games will also be compatible. I guess that may be asking too much? :D

It would be cool if all systems finally did this. handhelds have been this way for years now.

It's cool and all... but why do I feel like this is a desperate move for something? Do you think they are worried about the Xbox 360? I mean, Sony hasn't really been out to do this in previous years (handheld market aside).

I'd be more inclined to buy a PS3 right away if it also allowed play of PS1 and PS2 imports out of the box as well. I have a flip top modded PS2 for imports and I always wonder if the sucker will crap out on me at any given time. I'd hate to have to blow money on another modded PS2 when a fully region free PS3 is coming soon.
 
@BV: Nope, Sony never worries about Mircosoft it seems. It's kind of obvious where Sony stands, they overrule a market in Japan. The PSP is actually doing well according to Feb US Sales. (Even though DS says better?...doesnt make sense to me, unless some parts of the media havent really measured the exact numbers...dunno)

Yet Sony has that kind of loyalty from the consumers. I've met alot of people who really and strongly believe in Sony's products

.....well I meant more like the Asian community....Sony's history helped rebuild Japan after World War II to be honest...and the Asian community respects them deeply for their help over the decades...

:lol Neph.... give it a rest man. It wasn't a negative Sony comment. A lot of the moves they have been "opposed" to... they are finally opening up to... it is a bit of a desperate move. I would have said the same thing about Nintendo and their WiFi service.

Quit fightin! the fact is, I took the cheese sandwich without anyone knowing and for that, Sony dedicated to make a bold move like that. It's about time, maybe now our regions will no longer be behind bars. This is a great moment for us all and we should embrace it like the fall of the Berlin Wall or the fall of Communism in Russia! Think about it, if this catches all, all future consoles will be like this as well!
 
Well, the fall of the Soviet Union has gotten many people killed...people that would need not have died.

Anyways...region free is nice, but I don't really care any way. I don't play import games.

That's cool... except that I can't read Japanese so even importing would still be a bother. I think it would be better if they just localized more games than they do.
