Yeah since it has an internal clock it doesn't matter, doesn't hurt to keep it off though. Better safe than sorry right?

No ma'am, your save files are perfectly ok :)

UPDATE #2: It appears that it's now safe to turn on your PlayStation 3. Word is currently circulating of a fix, and our launch PS3 is indeed working just fine now. As of right now, it appears that no data has been lost. We'll let you know when Sony comments on the situation.

Yes, it was due to the fact that the internal CMOS clock could not recognize the leap year from Feb 28th to March 1st.
