Question about Adobe Photoshop.

I don't really think I'll get much help from you guys, (no offence :lol) but I need some help on deciding what to do. In school right now I'm taking a photoshop class that I enjoy a lot, and I want to continue using photoshop after the class ends. We use Adobe Photoshop CS4, and thats what I was planning to get this summer when I get some money, but I read that Adobe will be releasing CS5 in "mid 2010". So my question is ether to get CS4 sooner, or wait for CS5. (The choice is also hard because I don't know what improvents CS5 will make yet.) Any ideas are appreciated!

Find out if your school has deals on software. Often college bookstores can get software at special rates and pass those rates on to students.

^ What Grindspine said. Also, check the Adobe website for updates on the features they're incorporating.
There wont be an incredible difference, I'd assume, and CS4-5 will be naturally cross-compatible. So even if you had CS4, and another had CS5, you can still transfer your work.

A good plan though, would to be running the trial for CS4, then when CS5 comes out, get the trial for that. This way, you can compare which fits you best.
Adobe is not cheap software! There are some unique deals you can get that include multiple programs by Adobe in the one package, and in the long run, it's better to get that rather than just the one program at a time.
There's also some special offers for you to look into.

My first question is -

Do you even use all of the features of CS4? Maybe you can get CS3 cheaper? There's usually not a whole lot of difference between the versions within a year.

My second question is -

Can your computer handle it? Photoshop is quite the resource hog. The better the hardware, the smoother it will run.

My third question is -

What type of designs do you have in mind? Photoshop is so deep that you will probably be able to accomplish what you want even with an older version of PS. Remember, just because there isn't a feature in PS that does something automatically, does not mean that you won't be able to find a way to do it. PS has many, MANY tools at your disposable. Even the older versions.

If you are bargain hunting and don't need to use channels or layer masks, I would recommend Photoshop elements. Its about $100.

Gimp is a free program that does a lot of similar things that Photoshop does, but is difficult to learn.
