RPG Discussion Thread

Super Mario RPG is one of my favorite RPG's ever, indeed one of my favorite games ever. Great battle system, good story (for a Mario game :p), memorable characters and lots of things to find and do make it a great RPG in my book.

FFIV has surprised me alot on the DS. The level grinding on that was really fun. I love it. The DS has a ton of neat RPGs. Oh! Persona 4 has some awesome grinding places like the Heaven level. I like to level grind on some games. Depends on the game though.

In most Shin Megami Tensei games grinding is more of a necessity than an option because of creatures becoming obselete and the need to get good power inhertance from fusion.

Creatures becoming obselete, what does that mean?
Obselete might have been a poor choice of words. But what I was getting was that in most of Shin Megami Tensei games there are things called demons or devils in others Personas. They are things like demons, gods and monsters taken from different religions and folklore. Take the Persona Lilim as an example in both 3 and 4 part way through the game I found I couldn't use her anymore because they attacks she was capable of were to weak and there were no stronger ones to level up to.

As with anything, Penny Arcade says it best.

I don't know about Valkyria Chronicles but Xenosaga some really long cutscenes.

Although I did break down into tears a month ago when I found my Tales of the Abyss data was corrupted I had gotten all the titles unlocked, had all reciepes pretty done everything felt like fooling around with it just do some grinding for the fun of it and come to find it was all gone.

that's probably why most anime fanatics like RPGs......because they can actually watch those long cutscenes and not be bored with them due to the fact stories are actually interesting....

(curious thing is that valkyria chronicles did get an anime)

Zidart, yes and no. To me, it was hard to keep paying attention to the cutscenes in that one. However, the cutscenes in Tales of Symphonia, or even, Eternal Sonata, and other consistently kept my attention, and hey MGS4 (though not an RPG) seems to have impressive cutscenes. Unless there are people, like my roommate, who always skips cutscenes in his games (he never remembers the story to any game).

well to be honest it also depends how much you are into the game's story.... i love the setting of valkyria chronicles so i did pay a lot of attention to it... (plus i have never ever skipped a cutscene in a MGS game)

Hi Members,

Maybe it's just me,but do you think that some RPG'S overdue it a little when it comes to the storyline's dialogue at key points in the game, which seems to take forever to finish reading?

God Bless,

not really... i can endure a long dialogue as long as it is interesting... i really don't mind

Like Zi said, as long as it's interesting, I don't have a problem with it. And, I'd like for it to be voiced too, Starry.

Pretty much this, but I'd prefer no voice acting at all to terrible voice acting, especially in an older game where I really don't expect voice acting.

Well no voice acting, reminds me of those weirdly placed cutscenes that are in Eternal Sonata, you know the ones that are not voiced, or most of the cutscene is not voiced, but then, the last 5 lines are voiced, odd.

I agree. I guess I should have put "good voice acting".
