Ares God Of War
Hey guys,
Im looking for a new RPG to buy for my laptop. I havent played many, so any suggestions are appreciated.
I have played Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights, but I never really got into them, I felt like I was always missing out on something with the AD&D rules.

So please name any RPG's that you think I would have a good time with.

I know Battle for Middle Earth isnt rpg but I still havent gotten this game yet. I might think about getting this. I heard a lot of good things about it.

LOTR:BFME is a great game. One rpg that is good is either one of the Star Wars:KOTOR series. The first one is cheaper but the second one is supposedly a little better. I have only played the first one. For online RPGs I would guess World of Warcraft. I have heard nothing bad about this game so I presume it is good. I think it's like 15.00 a month but there are game time cards so you don't have to use a credit card. There is single-player too.

Morrowind is a great game. Nice and long, good story.

Only problem is that lots of the wilderness is open and worthless (if they cut it down, or added more than just 1 or 2 of the same rock over and over again it'd be better) and there's more cliff racers to fight than I ever cared to see.

Morrowind are one of the best RPG's out there the last few years, but be sure to get at least one expansion! The original game have the worst journal in any game the last two decades, and make the game almost unplayable. Everything are written chronological in the journal, as in when you get it. Quests are followed by random nonsense, followed by another quest, followed by more nonsense, followed by rumours and so on. After an hour you'll spend more time searching through the journal trying to figure out what quest you have than actually playing the game. The expansions fixes it, though.

Tribunal (the first expansion) are rather great, but have a strange "bug" or something. I don't want to spoil things, but the first time you fall asleep after installing it, you'll be attacked by someone from Tribunal. This isn't a big deal at higher levels, but can be annoying if you're not strong enough. (low-level mages in particullar have a problem.) But if you get around that, it's a brilliant game. I've never tried Bloodmoon (the second expansion) though, but you can turn into a werewolf!

Anyway, I hate Knights of the Crap Republic. I found it very much a linear Neverwinter Nights-light. Oh, and Kotor2? My brother told me his party had a long discussion whether or not to sneak into a room, but eventually figured it's dangerous, but necessary. And and how did they finally find the room? Just open the door and walk into the room -right next to them-! Uh... right. :?

How fast are your computer anyway? If you have a slow system, try Vampire: The Masquerade: Redemtion. It's old, but very good. If you have a computer fast enough to run the Half-Life 2 engine, try Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines. It's about the best RPG you get these days. Sure it's linear, but that don't matter. It's not where you go that matters, but how you get there. 8)

@Nightwolf

Thanks a lot for the post. I did get Morrowind and both Tribunal and Bloodmoon. Now Im glad I did because of what you wrote.
I was just wondering what character you chose. I took a Dark Elf with mainly stealth and some strength attributes. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks again for the post.

First of all, I will give you the same advice I give to anyone who wants to play a roleplaying game. First choose what kind of character you want to be (race, gender, age, class etc), and then try to actually play. Get as much into the character as possible, and don't think too much about stats. Sure you might not be a good swordfighter, but does that matter to a mage? ;)

Anyway, Morrowind has an interesting way of letting distributing skillpoints. Some races are better at things than others, and some classes are better (as I'm sure you know by now). The combination can be very good indeed, but it also mean you lack other abilities. Orcs are for instance great with axes, and so are barbarians. An orc barbarian would therefore be very good indeed with axes, but it comes at a cost. You will be as stealthy as an army of knights in heavy armor, and as intelligent as a piece of bread. :lol

But Morrowind are rather unique in other ways, and for instance you have three different guilds you can join. The orc barbarian can't do anything in a mage or thief guild, but he would be superb in a fighter's guild. Likewise a stealthy character are great for the thieves guild, and a mage would be great in a mage's guild.

Anyway, what I am talking about are choosing a character that suits you, and don't think too much about stats. Join a guild, do a few quests, try out your character. Afterwards try another character in another guild, and maybe try the main quest(s) after a while. Find a character you like, and have fun!

And by the way, you do know you can make your own classes, right? You can a) create a custom class in the game by choosing to fill in the blanks yourself, or b) create one in the toolset and then select it from the list. This way you can get the exact class you want. I made a rather decent Samurai this way. (let's just say I focused on Medium Armor...) ;)

ok thanks nightwolf
I did make my own class.

Right now I need to go to Hla Oad. I am having a tough time finding it, but I will get there eventually.

Need to get there? Why? :? I usually had five or six places I "needed to go", and still ended up going to place seven. And yes, usually on foot.

I've been looking for a good RPG as well, Im still on Diablo II no expansion though. I've heard alot about Morrowind, overheard some of my classmates talking about it, I didn't know what they were saying but they were all into it and it seemed like a awesome game, but they were talking about it for Xbox so I thought that it was only on that console. But now I know its on PC! There's hope! ;)

See if I can find a demo or something and test it out.

A demo? It's already getting aged, so try to find the Game of the Year Edition. (which includes the first expansion, "Tribunal".) To put it short, Morrowind can be put in two categories: Pre-Tribunal and Post-Tribunal. If you get Morrowind without Tribunal (as in pre-Tribunal), you'll find a good game you can't really play. It's still very good, and people loved it before the expansion were released. However, get Tribunal as well and you will find a great game. The main reason is the journal alone. It was really, really bad to begin with, so that part alone are one of the biggest selling points for Tribunal. Of course they added a new town, a new main quest etc etc etc, but it's the working journal that made the biggest selling point.

Anyway, I can give you a short version of how Morrowind really are. (and don't think much about it being The Elder Scrolls 3, as it don't really have connection to those games.) You start as a prisoner in a ship, and some guy comes over to you and explains a bit what have just happened. He asks your name, and you need to type it down. Next, a guard comes over to you and asks you to follow him. A pop-up box tells you how to control and all that, and as you leave the ship some guy asks where you are from. Your answer decide your race.Next, you find yourself in a small house. Some guys tells you he need some information about you to fill in the release papers, and you get the option to a) answer a few questions about how you would react in several situations, b) select a class from a list, or c) make your own class from scratch. When all this is done, you get to see your papers to make sure everything is correct. Finally, you are off. You need to deliver those papers to some guy, and have your very first quest.

By now you have finished the quick tutorial. See where this is heading? All you have done so far are creating a character. Instead of clicking though menus and assigning skill-points, you played through the whole thing and have gotten used to the controls. This says a little bit how thought-out this game is. Next I can mention that walking from top north to bottom south takes about ten hours real-time, and every single rock on the entire island are put there by hand. Nothing in this game is randomly generated. And before you ask, each race and class have their weakness and strengths. This means a barbarian orc are great with axes, but reallly bad at magic. However, it does not mean the barbarian orc can't use magic at all! You will just be very bad at it. This again means that you can play whatever character you want and even switch style "on the run", so to speak. Sure I don't recommend learning a new skill inside a deadly dungeon, but neiter me nor the game stops you.

Oh, and most of the island are open right away. This could have meant that you can wander off and find a huge demon when you are very low level, but the genius is that the monsters increase in level along with you. The monsters are pretty much always challenging (with some adjustment), and new monsters appear when you gain higher levels. Some dungeons are of course always filled with hard monsters, but the wilderness are usually relatively safe.

Sure you can complain that some NPC's look and feels lifeless and all that, but all in all this is a brilliant game. It's well worth a try if you like good roleplaying games.I highly recommend it.

I love this game so much. I was taking to my friend who is also playing it, and we were talking about a quest we had to do. The cool thing about this game is there are so many different ways to do things. One quest you need to get some artifacts. I taunted the shop owner until he attacked me, then I killed him and took the keys to the chest. My friend on the other hand pickpocketed the guy and opened the chest. Another option is to use a pick and sneak to open the chest. There are just so many ways to do things, and you have the freedom to do what ever you want.

Im on the second last quest of the Thieves guild. :)

All the quests can be solved in many ways, and many quests are very different. I've done everything from collecting mushrooms to solve a murder mystery to kill a rat. You could also just wander off and find random dungeons and all that as well. It's very fun.

And have you had a look at the water yet? It's strangely the best part in the entire game. It looks amazing on the surface.
