RPGs for the DS?

Well..one thing I've noticed in a lot of the launch titles and upcoming ones is there's a lack of RPGs...and talking about Superstar Saga and others in one of the other threads made me wonder what's going on with that? I know FF3 is in the works (with no release date) which makes me happy, but it doesn't really satisfy me to have an old game remade. The only thing I see that could possibly be an rpg type is that egg monster game from square? Does anyone know what the deal is with that game and/or know rumors of other rpgs?

Well..so much for us RPG fans hoping for a throwback to real rpgs instead of like the 'action rpgs' or whatever these new ones are that aren't real rpgs.

There's a lot of rpgs on the way. Most of them are parts of existing franchises, but there's some new ones coming.

Off the top of my head, here's the ones I can list:

Xenosaga DS
Baten Kaitos DS (this will be really cool with the touch screen)
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles DS
Mana series game

There was an unannounced Namco rpg a long time ago, but that probably turned into Xenosaga DS and Baten Kaitos DS.

I know there's more rpgs coming for DS than I have listed, though. I will look them up and post back later.

I was kinda disappointed by the original crystal chronicals..so I'm not too excited to getanother one of those. FF3, being my 2nd favorite rpg ever...of course I'll buy. I'm glad there's going to be a Xenosaga, cuz that franchise rules...do you know any of the release dates on the ones you mentioned? And I guess no one seems to know about the Eggman that Square's putting out :)

They are actually doing a lot to it. They are adding a lot of touch screen functionality. Also, I'm not sure where you are, but the FF3 they are releasing for the DS is the Japanese FF3, which was never released in the United States at all. So really we are getting a new game.

The PSP so far only has Final Fantasy Advent Children announced, and that's not a game, it's a CG movie. I think there is another FF7 spinoff coming out for the PSP, but so far a true port of FF7 hasn't been announced for either system.

The FF7 game that's supposed to come out is called FF7: Core Crisis as of current, I'm pretty sure. So yeah, it's not a port...but it's a sequel maybe. Now...I hadn't heard that this FF3 was going to be the real 3 and not 6 before...you're completely sure of that? And isn't 3 (talking of the japanese versions now) very similar to 2 which wasn't very good anyway? Or is it not?

Yes.

Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned it a while back in an interview.

Following a teaser trailer that announced Final Fantasy III's new status as a DS game, Miyamoto commented, "This is the first time that Final Fantasy III has appeared on hardware outside of the Famicom (Japanese NES), isn't it?" Offering up memories of the Wonderswan version of the game, which never surfaced despite a lengthy development time, Kawazu responded with, "Over the past 15 years we've tried numerous times, but as we couldn't get it to work, this time we've decided to make the game for DS."

Here is a link to the full article of that.
