This is my favorite forum on the Citadel.
Dead or Alive series on consoles and Tekken/Soul Caliber in arcades.
IMO, the best fighting games are the ones I've never played cuz I don't like them at all. 'Cept for crazy stuff like this on M.U.G.E.N..

Soul Calibur II, definitely. The only fighting game I've ever liked.

Now favorite fighters? I can answer that. My favorite is Dead or Alive, with DoA2 Ultimate being my favorite in the series.
I also enjoy Soul Calibur, and some of the Street Fighter games.
And let's not forget the Super Smash Bros. series. I guess it's debateable whether that's a fighting game, though.

Smash Bros. I play few fighting games, and the one I can remember(SCII) sucked.
Street Fighter series, Guilty Gear, King of Fighters, Tekken 3, MUGEN (Who doesn't want any character facing each other?), and Virtua Fighter.

Neo Geo King of Fighter series, Samurai Shodown series. Best 2-D fighters IMHO. Love the deep gameplay that is addictive and never gets old. I'm playing them now on my NGCD.
I also think that the weird neo fighter Waku Waku 7 is classic.
The Last Blade 1 & 2 and ...... well..... :-\ .......... just throw in all the Neo Geo fighters. Hey I'm crazy about them. Can't get enough of that hand drawn animation and those crazy colorful characters.
